while the hooded menace stuff is questionable i also feel like i have very little power over any of that because im not like, ingrained in the scene on any level than just listening to some bands, and i see very little harm in continuing to do that despite those connections i know very little about. no one listens to me when i tell them to listen to music anyway, so no harm if i just continue to listen to them and just stop saying that others should too. theres tons of bands i continue to listen to that have done much worse, which i am completely at peace with myself with after many years of contemplating the issues, what my personal lines are, and why i listen to certain bands. im just not like going out of my way telling other people they should also be okay listening to whatever band because if you're not, you're not and that's fair too. however i have caught plenty of flack and had people try to drag me down because of whatever i listen to on my own time, but thats an insecurity on their part because i literally have no power over any of this shit and attacking me certainly wont give them any power either, as much as certain individuals like to pretend that it does.

I don't disagree with this, but I feel like personally, I at least want to know if a band is problematic. I may still listen to them, but I probably won't buy their merch or go see them live. I'm not shaming anyone for making their own choice, just sharing the tweet so people can be informed.

It's pretty easy to just not listen to bands associated with nazis.

I don’t play the guilt by association game and it’s the singer who is not a mainstay in the band being in another band with a guy who’s in another band that’s nazi affiliated so it’s a pretty wild leap to say by listening to hooded menace im listening to nazis, but whatever I’m gonna listen to what I listen to and if it bothers you that’s on you because it doesn’t really matter

i’ve spoken at length multiple times about this topic with other bands to the point that it’s exhausting but, like, even if it’s seven degrees of separation type shit … it isn’t that hard to not associate yourself with nazis. it’s actually incredibly easy.

listen to the band if you want to. it’s fine. as someone who hasn’t listened to them yet, i’m certainly not running to check them out now.

You'd be surprised that it's harder than you think without spending a shit ton of time doing research.

Take Hooded Menace for instance. They're on Season of Mist. They're a relatively mainstream label by underground metal standards so you think that should be safe. Combine that with the fact they've gotten press from outlets ranging from Lambgoat, Metalsucks, No Clean Singing, etc., that should further validate that they're safe by your standards, right? Especially because they're an apolitical band in themselves,

Without doing a deep dive checking out every previous band they're in, when you come across a new band on a level the band of Hooded Menace, it's safe to assume they're fine.

Another good example of this would be Dragonforce via this article: Confronting Dragonforce About Their Racist, Homophobic Past

It's fucking Dragonforce. It's about fire, flames, dragons, and going through them. They were on Roadrunner at that point.

I'm not advocating one way or the other because everyone has their own personal levels of comfort with this stuff. I certainly have my own. There are just shades of grey with this.

    Why would
Just stop listening to bands associated with this stuff.

I'm extremely well aware of the amount of bands that are associated with nazi and white power groups. If you hear that a band is associated with stuff like that just stop listening to them, stop supporting them. It's really not hard and I promise you that there are tons of great bands that aren't associated with vile and hateful things.

That's the approach I take too, but I was just saying that finding out about this stuff isn't exactly as easy as you think. Because for every Phil Anselmo Nazi gesturing you have on stage, you have a band like Hooded Menace who don't have any explicit political leanings at all. It's only when you get into an "also members of", "former members of", or "their other band is on a label that's explicitly or implicitly fascist" that it can get difficult to track unless you go to Metal Archives or google every band you listen to. That's why shit like the "Is it sketch thread?" on r/rabm is a useful resource if you really want to police your listening. I personally don't have the time for that so sometimes things fall through the cracks unfortunately and the only way to rectify that behavior is after the fact.

It's true that sometimes things fall through the cracks, especially with black metal acts. Sometimes info on this stuff is hard to find. If I hear a band might be associated with stuff like that it doesn't take more than a couple google searches to find more info on it and then make a decision from there. Personally I'd never want to support any group or band even vaguely associated with nazis/racists.

Lmao no we're not. Legit one guy is like don't listen to bands affiliated with Nazis and folks are like it's just too hard to know.

Also one hundred percent of our biases come into this. It was easy to cancel august burns red for giving that psycho guy a chance but hey they're easy to dislike when you don't like them anyway. hooded menace dude that has nsbm ties...we just can't decide.

I'm pretty sure I said I agree with him. Sometimes you just have to do your research or wait for someone to bring the ties to your attention.

Looking at artists and accountability through a lens of being “canceled” or not is so reductive and often used in bad faith. Like I wish we as a society can stop saying shit like “omg they’re CANCELED” and have honest and open discussions about artists that are bigoted, abusers, have sketchy ties, what have you. Which I think we do on this site for the most part, but still.

Yeah I know that he’s a Tim Lambesis superfan. Doesn’t mean that ABR lost out on anything. They’re still touring, they’re still making music, clearly they’re doing just fine
