This is back to the par of the first two albums for me, aka "half bangers, half forgettable." But the bangers on this one are really great!

Better If You Don't might be one of my favorite songs by them.

I know the context of the song but even out of context, putting it in the frame of a dying relationship, holy fuck, what a song.

I’m up north and my in-laws have Good Morning America on. I’m surprised to see Chvrches performing. They’re great live. They performed Good Girls and California.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

never really heard this band's stuff before but spin this album today and it rules

    Blistering Guitar Lead

Bought this album on CD earlier this week and have been giving it heavy dedicated listens since then

    Stray thoughts:

Lauren's lyric writing is truly excellent on this album it really feels like she tapped into a more personal almost singer-songwriter type writing style

The use of guitars is excellent across the entire record, particularly on "California" and "Better if You Don't"

"Nightmares" is the one song I have taken longer to warm to than the others but the John Carpenter instrumental section in it is incredible

    Wonderful record

I am finally throwing this on for the first time right now. Very excited given the praise I have seen about this album.

EDIT: Just gonna edit this post with some first impressions.

    1) Asking for a friend is nice distillation of what I really love about CHVRCHES. Off to a solid start.

Ohhhhh that was a nice crescendo halfway through. Got me moving.

Awww come on! It should have ended with her saying "home". Missed opportunity for chills.

    2) He said She said is a banger, obvi.

    3) California has a star next to it on iTunes. We will see if that star is warranted.

    Well, that was quite lovely.

    4) Violent delights! Oh yeah. I am really digging this song. That kinda muffled drum track in the verses really does it for me.

    5) How not to drown was not a pre-release track I spent much time with. I remember being neutral-ish on it. Maybe even "down" on it? Either way, I am grooving with it now. Though I could honestly do without Robert Smith on it. His inclusion doesn't do much for me.

    6) Final Girl...I admit I got distracted by posting on the general politics thread at the beginning of this song. But the bass line reminds me of Summer Skin a bit.

    7) Good Girls another absolute banger.

    8) Lullabies is very pleasant. I've kinda been swaying my head back and forth the whole time. Man, 8 tracks in and there really hasn't been a bad track. Quite an achievement.

    9) Nightmares is probably my least favorite thus far. But it wasn't "bad" by any stretch. Again, a real achievement.

    10) Better if you dont...a 10 song record. Perfect. I tend to favor 10-12 song records. So let's bring this thing to a proper close.

Really vibing with this song thus far.

Album has definitely grown on me a bit and I enjoy it a lot. Highs don't seem as high as Bones or Every Open Eye, but I'm aware I may be in the minority there.
