  1. I'm not picking on you but I hate that people feel they wasted going to college by getting a "useless" degree. People should go to college and study whatever they want! And it should be free or almost free! We are going to have a generation of accountants (me lol), engineers, etc that hate their lives because it was the safe thing to study because of earning potential, but not what they wanted to do with their lives.

Who knows what society is losing because creative people can't afford to follow their dreams.

Most of my friends, including myself, have a career in something that had nothing to do with what they majored in at college.

I completely agree with your assessment! And I enjoyed my time there. I have explored careers in film and decided it wasn't for me is the big reason I feel like maybe I "wasted" it, but that is too strong of a term for sure.

I think the amount of people who majored in something just because of the money is a bit over exaggerated. If you really don’t like it you won’t make it through 4 years and probably end up changing your major early on to something you are more interested in even if the job market or salary isn’t that great for it

I could be wrong but that’s just what I gather. Like as an engineer I genuinely don’t remember meeting many people if at all in college (or elsewhere) that was just doing it because of the high salary potential.

not everyone can do stem or engineering, if I did that there'd be a lot of building collapses haha

I majored in philosophy in college, partially because I was interested in it but mostly because it had the least number of required classes/credits so I could take more random stuff I was interested in.

My girlfriend and I were both Poli Sci majors. Now, I write about toys and she does administrative and sales work at car dealerships.

That would be myself and about everyone who was in my major. I think of the 20 or so people that I still follow via LinkedIn from my major class about maybe 2 or 3 are still in our major industry.

FTA: "Out of the 238 incoming Fall semester students, only 49 of them were actually enrolled in classes, and the remaining 189 'may not have been planning to return to the university this fall at all,' UVA spokesperson Brian Coy told CNN."

Out of like ~22k students, that's not bad.

It’s actually ridiculous to ask a 18-20-year-old kid to decide at that age what they want their career to be for the rest of their life. Fuck that.

I'm currently majoring in Sociology and have virtually no idea how that's gonna play out in the real world.

Honestly, I really want to become a music producer & mixing engineer, but that market is so oversaturated I'm just getting a real degree so I have something to fall back on.

My husband went to Columbia (cinematography and photography) and he’s a machinist/CAD engineer with no degree.

Y’all should just become teachers. Good job security, direct path from education to career, and a union job.

most importantly, we need more good people to become teachers, and I have faith in all of you. Except David, who is already a teacher and might be too horny to work in a school…

That wasn't really my experience. In physics, it seemed like most people hated it but thought that they could get a good job with it so were pushing through with it, or, less common, really loved physics but were absolutely miserable with the major/classes themselves. In anthropology/psychology, most people just didn't care and thought it was the easiest way to a degree. Taking classes in a lot of areas, I think I may have met maybe 5 people who were both passionate about what they were studying and not completely miserable with the workload. I can imagine something like accounting would be even worse in that sense. Maybe teaching too, but I do hope not for future students' sake

Grad school is different in that regard: everyone comes in passionate and then seems to slowly lose their passion as time goes on

I majored in economics and I'm a financial analyst but it has nothing to do with anything I learned. I also minored in philosophy because I had a crush on a girl but I ended up enjoying those classes a lot more lol

I ended up with a degree in philosophy because sophomore year I decided I wanted to go to law school and figured since I have to get a BA anyway I might as well study something that interests me on a personal level. Plus it helped with writing/analytical skills which are the most important skills for lawyers, though that wasn’t why I chose it. If I could have just skipped undergrad altogether then I probably would have done that

I majored in marketing and work in marketing so it was obviously relevant. But I learned so much more on the job than I did in class, plus most of the people I’ve worked with majored in things that had nothing to do with it, so I wish I had studied something more interesting.

Yeah pretty much. People get degrees now just so they can get any kind of job with benefits, the degree isn’t always super relevant to the career.

I have a bachelors in audio production and I’m glad I did it but I’m probably never gonna use it as my main source of income. I’ve freelanced here and there and interned at a studio but I started using heroin my last semester of college so I’ve never really given myself much of an opportunity to pursue it as a career since I’ve been dealing with drug addiction and everything that comes with it for almost six years now. Hard to start a career when you’re already in that position. And then a few years ago I started working in restaurants and realized there’s extremely good money to be made there so that’s just what I do now, and with a few years experience under my belt now I can get whatever restaurant job I apply for very easily.
