Currently working full time freelance in my legit dream job. It’s the highest paid gig I’ve ever had. Really really hope I get promoted to permanent employee. My girlfriend on the other hand who I live with makes less than half of me. We rent an apartment and recently renewed our annual lease. If things are good and financially stable, we could start thinking about a condo. I don’t think I could ever get a house. We have no plans for kids so we don’t need a lot of space but our current place is getting a bit occupied with furniture.

  3. Going back to the 100k a year discussion.

100k a year should be more than comfortable. It should allow you to save, pay your bills, take care of your family, etc. But at the end of the day, people making that kind of money are still struggling. The combined income of me and my wife is 180k give or take but her student loans are 900 a month and mine are about 350. Add to that a mortgage in new Jersey, daycare for my 3 year old, a car loan, and everything else to live, it's still not easy.

Now I'm lucky compare to others in this thread and I realize that. Good job, good money, independent, etc. But the only way to really save money long term is to cut expenses. At some point your earning potential plateaus. But the expenses never do. Health care will always cost more as you get older and have more issues. Real estate taxes always go up. You have a kid in daycare but then you pay for their college. Gas is more expensive. The world is getting warmer so it costs more to cool your house. The cost of quality healthy food is more expensive if you can even get it.

Our parents could survive on one income, 100k or not. They had savings, could retire on time, etc. Our generation is in insurmountable debt. Can't afford rent or to buy a house. Have no savings. What will happen when we are all 65? Do we have to work until we are dead? Id like to think that health care and education will be taken care of in the next 20-30 years to ease the burden but I'm not optimistic. It's hard to be positive these days.

Sorry for the rant. Tldr we fucked

  7. Not having kids helps with expenses for sure. That would change the calculus completely. Our budget for living is really not all that much comparatively and we do a good job sticking to it, so I see some of these numbers here from other parts of the country and they seem so high compared to that.

I get a feeling of jealous and inadequacy, that I don’t like to admit is there. But it is.

Just want to say thanks for being here man; I appreciate you being so honest about your past and your struggles. I like learning from all kinds of people from all walks of life, and it’s great to get perspectives on things I wouldn’t normally get in day to day life

I think if there wasn't the constant looming threat of a bankrupting health emergency, I would feel a lot more comfortable making less money. I dont have kids and have some savings, but it still seems like it could all disappear in an instant.

I made $4k last month for the first time EVER and it was an incredible feeling. Did I have to work 6 days a week for three weeks and 7 days for the fourth to achieve that? Yes.

I live in the second most expensive area in Montana, but what's wild is that it's much more financially favorable than when I lived in Los Angeles and Austin.

I'm 26, I've either got friends with houses or dozens of thousands in student debt, and I sorta land in between. I don't have much in savings, but I was able to leverage a free ride to an in-state school, which I promptly wasted on a film degree.
