I do appreciate the links, I suppose I don't recall you being the one who posted those. So I do apologize there. But I don't actually see where you address it besides sharing other's comments. Do you have an opinion on Brand New? Do you still listen to them?

  3. I thought this article, and the conversation within, does a good job of distilling where I’m at right now as well. The band won’t be on my end of the year list and a statement about why will be. The main reason is that I want two things at this point: To not use my platform and voice to promote this kind of behavior (the accusations themselves and the subsequent silence while women were harassed), and to make sure that this history is part of the band’s legacy as well. It can’t just be swept away and forgotten.

There’s been a swath of these articles written today and I recommend reading them all. Over the past few days I’ve received countless emails and messages from people wanting to talk about the rot at the heart of our music scene. I’ve heard from people who were abused by some of the more well-known frontmen in the scene, but aren’t ready to come forward yet. And I’ve heard from many that are. We, as a community, are going to need to face all of this head-on and come to terms with our own culpability as well.

I also want to say I am extremely disappointed that Brand New (with or without Jesse’s name attached) have not come out and asked their fans to not harass the women that have come forward with their stories. This has led to conspiracy theories spreading, harassment, and some truly disgusting behavior. Bands, labels, and all those associated with artists or celebrities need to know that part of their job when something like this comes out into the open is to make sure they’re active in the process. You can’t be silent while someone is re-victimized and think you’ve taken the moral high-ground. I believe it’s important to use your power and platform for good, and healing, not just when you want to sell records.

We’re all a little broken in our own unique ways, but music has always been what’s tied us together. That’s why we’re here together on this website. That’s bigger than one song, one album, or one band. Those moments will continue to exist. I don’t begrudge anyone that can immediately listen to this band’s music again, give them money, see them live, and move on immediately, but I know that’s not me. Any chance at rehabilitation is not immediate. So, that’s where I’m at right now. I’ll be posting very little news about the band in the foreseeable future unless it’s extremely newsworthy and relevant. I’m out on the music for quite a while. I’m holding on to my memories, the undeniable moments I’ve had with these records, but anything going forward will carry with it the weight of what we learned this weekend. The memory will be there, but for me, the songs won’t ever sound the same.

I’d never tell anyone what they need to do, but I know what I want to do. I don’t want this my life, I don’t want this in my music scene, and I don’t want to contribute to the normalization of acts like this. If we just go on, everything that happened fades to the back of everyone’s memory. There’s no accountability, and those that were hurt, some apparently as young as 14, can’t gleefully forget as they craft their end of the year lists or discuss the latest album ranking. I believe, for myself and myself alone, that I want to say this is not welcome in our music scene and that it won’t be tolerated or accepted. I can’t just put on a Brand New album and divorce what I am hearing come out of the speaker from what I know of the person singing. I can’t see his face on my wall and not, at my core, be shaken. Something has changed and there needs to be a record of that. Bands being formed today need to see that there are repercussions for abuses of power and that we aren’t going to sweep it under the rug any longer.

This is something I’ve been struggling with for almost three years. Something I struggled with all week when I knew heading back to 2006 was on the horizon. Something I’ve struggled with since the first accusations against Jesse Lacey came to light, and I wrote my first thoughts the day after. I sit here now, no better prepared to talk about how I feel. I’ve probably written a dozen drafts over the past three years trying to put to words what’s inside of me, and I fail every single time. So, all I can say is what’s true for me here today. That album, The Devil and God…, was exceptionally important to me not only in 2006 but for almost 14 years after as well. There is no denying that it is a part of my past, and part of me in that rare way some albums feel tattooed to your soul. But we get to choose who we are in the present, and I choose not to have it be part of mine. Over the past three years, I have spoken to multiple people hurt by this band. To people that, as recent as a few months ago, were still being harassed by their fans for coming forward with what happened to them. I cannot even start to move to a phase where I can think of anything else while that is still happening, while the silence and lack of support for these brave women is still leading to their harassment. I know what my past holds, I have no idea what the future will bring, but I know how I feel right now in the present and how wrong I would feel to praise, elevate, or lift up that album, no matter how influential it was to me, or the music scene as a whole.

And this is just searching for thirty seconds. I've written thousands of words about it.

i'm just going to act like the rest of you do in the ADTR situation. Again it's a popularity thing on this website.

I'm trying to prove a point. I've seen nothing factual or proven outside of the original accusation which again seems to have been only that. But yet all of you jump all over ADTR despite nothing being proven. That seems odd to me.

    The intrusive whisper fascinates me

Idk if anyone has heard, but Pete Parada, the drummer of The Offspring is on hiatus with the band because he can’t get the vaccine due to a past medical complication, so he can’t tour. I kinda hope this opens the conversation for high risk people/people who are legitimately unable to get the vaccination for medical reasons. I feel really bad for them and how they’ll have to adapt. It’s also part of the reason why I’m still choosing to wear a mask

    His full announcement is here:

Holy shit. This is a great tour if legit

Listen, even if Josh is completely innocent in regards to the statutory r*pe allegations, he still
    -Hit his girlfriend
-Took a shit on the hood of a fan's car

Really, the whole band should have taken the allegations more seriously, instead of just ignoring them. If you have nothing to hide, then you publicly address them and put forward an action plan to create a safe space. Instead they just blocked everyone asking for accountability.

I do know he put out a statement regarding the rape allegations. Denying it.

I see nothing about hitting his girlfriend?

Anyways I'm done discussing this. Let the regular posting continue. You can hate on ADTR all you want. Apparently everyone who goes to their sold out shows, the police, etc. don't believe everything they read on a message board.

By the way. Jesse Lacey is a piece of shit scumbag. Would also love to see a screenshot of Jason Tate's spotify account to see if he still plays Brand New or not.

Honestly, I think "I know this artist could be an abuser, but I'd rather not deal with the emotional & social consequences of stopping listening to them" is just a much more intellectually honest stance.

It's still not a great argument, but it's better than arguing with people who actually want accountability, and pretending you have the moral high ground.

If you're going to go see ADTR, go and god bless, but either keep it to yourself or don't act surprised when people criticize you for it.

I agree. Jesse Lacey is scum. I heard just last week he ran over an ant on the highway. Might have been an entire family. I don't know.
