That is some truly awful shit. Sickening.

 

PWR BTTM were only cancelled because they’re queer. It was deserved, but wouldn’t have happened it was a white cis band.

 

For a band that espoused a safe space message in the queer punk community, it was important that PWR BTTM stopped being supported in that space. That's why it happened so quickly, if the community valued accountability to the fans and the bands, they couldn't let that continue.

That being said, bands outside of those communities are rarely held to the same scrutiny. Maybe that will start to change.

 

What ever happened to Ben Hopkins releasing solo music? I know there was a Billboard article about it but I hope they saw the backlash and realized people want them to stay gone forever.

 

Just a heads up, we should still be mindful of Ben's they/them pronouns, no need to misgender someone even if they are an abuser.

They did release a solo album, and have music available on bandcamp, but that's all I've heard about. I think Ben is still represented by Lisa Barbaris, who also manages Cyndi Lauper. Lisa only started managing them in the aftermath of PWR BTTM getting dropped from Polyvinyl.

I did listen to a handful of tracks. It’s literally major civil rights speech samples cut into love/break up songs that have nothing to do with “injustice.” I didn’t read lyrics per se, but I heard nothing that actually ties to the samples he used on the album. Dumb. Glad this is being addressed cause it made no sense when I listened.
