COPE is a very good album eclipsed by every other album this band has made

Cope is the album I’ve listened to the most from them. I love it so, so much, and while I won’t say it’s their best, it’s not their worst. In my opinion.

The last third of "See It Again" is one of the best moments in their discography.

If Manchester Orchestra records were food, every record is some kind of steak. Rich, decadent, deep in flavor. Then there’s Cope. Cope is fried chicken. No one’s pretending it’s five star cuisine, but it’s always satisfying. It’s cheap, greasy, rough around the edges, and delicious.

(And if you want to take it easy, there’s Hope - the boneless, skinless, grilled option that’s quite tasty as well).

I love Cope as songs, but it doesn’t feel like an MO album. Re-listened again today to confirm.

Gotta say the live version of the silence pretty much makes the album version obsolete. Immaculate recording

The top 2 was really easy for me for each one (Golden, Colly; Hot, River; Pensacola, PBE; Ocean, Cope) but for Black Mile I couldn't go outside of that Alien -> Sunshine -> Grocery run, it's just too perfect.

For ILAV I went with Wolves, though I could've easily picked Neighborhood. If the album version of "Where Have You Been?" came anywhere close to the live version that would be my pick, but that Casio keyboard choral sound is laughable on the album version. For METN I was going between Pride and Everything to Nothing, but I've been into Everything to Nothing more these days so picked that. I could've picked almost anything else from SM, but I just have a personal connection to Apprehension so I had to pick it. And for Cope, Top Notch is the song that usually pops into my head that makes me want to listen to that album so it got the vote.

I'm only an extremely casual fan of this band, have listened to their music only a handful of times (although I did see them live in 2019 to catch Foxing and Oso Oso), but this new song is pretty cool. I need to do a discography dive someday soon.

Whoops, I came in at a bad time as a very casual listener hahaha

I do like everything I've heard on METN so that's probably my favorite out of what I have heard.

You should definitely check them out. I think, based on your posts, you’d probably dig them in either release order or reverse order

Can I just say how happy I am that most people aren’t counting Hope as an album. I see way too many people count that as a stand-alone album when it’s just an acoustic version. Biggest pet peeve as a MO fan.

now to try and rank the songs...

    ILAV:
    Now That You’re Home
    Neighborhood is Bleeding
    Golden Ticket

    METN:
    Shake It Out
    Pride
    Hot One

    Simple Math:
    Deer
    Pensacola
    Leaky Breaks

    Cope:
realized I don’t really care for this album and barely listened to it. I like The Mansion because it ties to the far superior Weatherbox song The Devil and Whom

    ABMTTS:
didn’t love this album at first, but it’s grown on me lately. especially with how good it sounded in the live stream

    The Alien
