thats actually a good idea tbh, would make integrating them into the MCU much easier

Bits aside there’s nothing mandating that anything from the MCU needs to be the same as anything from the comics. The MCU Civil War was nothing like the comics Civil War. Iron Man 3 would’ve never been possible if the MCU was strictly following the comics.

Also who actually wants a strict adaptation of the comics? Barely anyone I’d wager. I want the MCU to branch out and do different things. It would be lame if they retconned Wanda to be a secret mutant. Having her powers literally come from an Infinity Stone is a cool concept! It’s good when they change stuff, it keeps things interesting and keeps comics fans on their toes.

Besides, suddenly thrusting mutant status on her at this point would be meaningless to anyone but the fans.

616 Scarlet Witch hasn’t been a mutant in the comics for the past, like, seven years? I prefer her & Quicksilver as mutants, but at this point I’m kinda used to this status quo, so it’s whatever.

(Also, mutants are unbelievably easy to introduce, lol.)

Yeah I'm not sure what makes it so difficult to introduce mutants. They're a race of people who are discriminated against; it isn't that farfetched to think they would do things in secret? Maybe a Hydra-infilitrated S.H.I.E.L.D was doing experiments on mutants, so they went into hiding. Or just use the multiverse as an excuse, as lazy as it is.

I'd rather have an MCU where they take 5 minutes to introduce the mutants in a lame way that I can just forget about 5 minutes later, than to have no mutants at all, but that's just me

yeah I mean they’re gonna have to do the multiverse thing, it’ll be lazy but it’s the best option

The Reverse Blip is gonna bring the mutants in, the people come back and they have powers because of something funky with the Infinity Stones.

Wouldn't that make half of all living beings mutants? That seems like a lot heh

Would’ve heard something about mutants by the time of Far From Home if that were the case and that many people were affected by it. Millions of people suddenly manifesting powers they couldn’t control wouldn’t go unnoticed for long.

One of my main problems with having A Reason for mutants (outside of just... a mutated sci-fi gene) is that it takes a lot away from the whole marginalized demographic analogy, which is a very important component to the X-Men.

I’ve been dabbling a bit recently in Ultimate X-Men recently. Mostly out of nostalgia, though the BKV issues drawn by Stuart Immonen are very good. But, the reveal in that universe that mutants came from super soldier, Weapon X stuff really sucks. It’s just... not the same. You can’t make analogies to queerness & the like in the same way when the government made mutants. And, I feel like the same would be true if mutants all came from the multiverse, or the snap, or Wanda, or whatever bullshit.

I agree. The mutant gene being a God-given blessing (or curse) is a core component of the story of what it’s like to be a mutant.

Marvel could always say people were chosen at random due to the snap or whatever and that society still chooses to marginalize all of those who received powers from it, but it wouldn’t ring the same due to what the X-Men have always represented.

That’s also what separated X-Men from other Marvel series, imo. It wasn’t strictly tech or government experiments, it was a natural way of life corrupted by multiple societies throughout history that decided it wasn’t to their standards.

Mutants being brought to the MCU from another reality wouldn’t change the fact that those mutants got their abilities from mutated genes lol like what. Nobody is saying their powers would be “from” the multiverse.

If all mutants came from another earth or the children of another earth, then they’re aliens. They’re Superman; they’re Milestone’s Icon; they’re Kree/Skrull/etc. They’re an immigration analogue, which already exists elsewhere in the superhero landscape, & no longer the iconic queer analogue they’ve been for decades.

I’m sure a lot of people who appreciate that aspect of mutants would be able to shrug that off, but on a storytelling level, it’d be a terrible choice.

I’m more & more convinced that Marvel Studios doesn’t give a shit about even basic (children’s movie level) storytelling, though, lol, so whatever.

Hey they're all just nerd movies for children anyway right so at the end of the day who really cares

It just really bums me out that the storytelling bar for Disney animation is on average higher than the ostensibly older skewing Marvel & Star Wars. I don’t expect high art, but the company behind Up, Inside Out, & Moana should be able to at least reach the occasionally really messy level of Claremont in the 80s.

Though, Pixar’s MVP did recently drop the ball hard with Soul’s racial politics, so nothing at Disney is fully trustworthy artistically. Which... no shit I guess, lol.

If even the 90s animated X-Men series portrays mutants better than Feige and co then that’s going to be a disappointment.

I've been watching this with my gf, who doesn't follow along with comics, the MCU, etc., this show is the first one she's really followed along with intently beyond Dr. Strange and uh... yeah, they'd lose her so, so fast if they start getting confusing as hell with Pietro/Fox/mutants/multiverse/etc., like... keep it simple. We all deeply follow this stuff, but a lot of people absolutely don't.

With 23 films' worth of backstory, 11 announced films on the way, several TV series on Disney+ coming, and a bunch of now-potentially relevant material spread out across the Fox X-Men franchise, the Netflix shows, and even Sony's live action Spider-Verse, expecting anything from them to be kept simple isn't realistic at this point. The Cinematic Universe has become just as complex as any of the comics universes.

I often think about how I could ever possibly introduce my future children to the MCU. By the time I a) have kids and b) they're old enough to watch and appreciate these movies, there will likely be over 50 films and 10-20 Disney+ series to catch up on. Even Star Wars is getting daunting between the 11 films, the three animated series, The Mandalorian, all the other shows they've already announced are coming, and the books.

I feel like we're heading for a future where kids grow up uninterested in either of these properties because, unless you were there at the beginning to follow along as it went, catching up on these properties is going to be way too much of a time commitment. Although I guess that'll be the point when Marvel pulls a comics move and resets the Cinematic Universe so they can start all over again with Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, etc.

Maybe the “Marvel Cinematic Universe” will eventually work more like the comics for audiences, where you can enjoy whatever individual stories, characters’ series, creators’ runs, etc., you want without needing to be a completionist.

    I do not exist.

This is my fear with the whole multiverse direction. To be honest, the thought of all three spider-men sounds too convoluted for me.

Explaining the Pietro appearance to my wife at the end of this episode was funny.

As much as I love the MCU, I wish there were more self contained movies and shows that didn’t tie into something bigger. Gives the characters some room to play in a different sandbox and not have to be a certain way to fit into the bigger picture.
