Also his whole schtick was to be this really extreme, shocking, macabre artist. Which I think in part enabled him to do and say those horrifying things. Some people just wrote it off as him portraying a character.

 

I don’t know what became of it/if it was proven false, but a person did come forward about Trent around the same time that someone came forward about Maynard from Tool

 

wasn't that retracted as to Reznor though? or something like that? i remember people being bummed about Reznor being called out but then it turned out that it wasn't accurate as to him?

 

I thought there were discrepancies pointed out in both of those stories but I could just be misremembering

There was a weird coincidence of both accounts being made on the same day, or something like that? It’s been a while since I looked into it. I don’t think anything was ever retracted, more that it was anonymous and nothing else came of it

edit: yeah that article above was the furthest I got, I guess the Reznor tweet was deleted.

Also the person who made the claim against Maynard (not sure if this was the case with Trent) said they would be willing to testify if necessary. I'm not sure if anything came of that though.

 

I remember there being more than one accusation against Maynard, but only that one thing with Trent

 

As a mentally ill person who has no proof of their assaults, the implications of this post really suck on a lot of different levels.

 

There were definitely multiple allegations against MJK, though I think many of them were "secondhand" or even further removed (i.e. I know someone who this happened to, or I heard a similar story about someone years ago). I don't say that to diminish those stories - personally, I believe them to be true - but more to point out the likely reason why they didn't gain as much traction.

 

Saying something, i.e. testimony, IS proof. It's the most common type of evidence in any court case, to point to a specific "standard".

 

Here's what we're not gonna do.

Just a general PSA but it's a good idea to think about what you are posting before you actually hit send, not just in this case but in general.

 

Also if you remember what actually happened in the thread when the Mitski thing went down was a bunch of people being very reasonable and saying that they would stand with any victim of abuse but also that in a case with such shocking details, more information was needed. You know, like human beings.

 

That was low of me, and sorry to Anna. That said, I really don’t think this thread is very helpful and feels like a dog pile so I’m just gonna hit ignore, I don’t come back in and y’all can do what you do. We all win.

 

I just want to say I find this thread to be quite helpful. I don't know of any other place, sans Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/Reddit, where accountability in music (and entertainment) is regularly discussed. This thread is only as useful as the people posting in it are, so if you're posting generalizations, gotchas, who?, their music sucks, and other things not appropriate to this thread people are going to call you out. That's why I said it's a good idea to think about what you are typing before you hit post reply. We've all posted things on here that are not appropriate/off base/etc., but we learn from it and don’t continue.

 

I follow this thread primarily because I think it’s a useful source of information. Unfortunately the discourse isn’t always great.

If you don’t think this thread is helpful that’s your prerogative but if you can’t understand how “y’all believed a mentally ill woman with no proof” is incredibly offensive and perpetuates multiple tactics used to silence and invalidated victims, I’d really encourage you to spend some time educating yourself on rape culture

 

You have to wonder if Dita got a nudge from MM to put out that statement today. Also, I didn't realize they were together for 7 years.

 

Yeah, I follow this thread for information on what sort of things are going on in the music industry. I feel bad sometimes because I don’t really contribute much, but I do find this thread helpful

 

"I really don’t think this thread is very helpful and feels like a dog pile " comes off to me as a variation of "cancel culture is ruining society", not that you think the latter because you said the former but both ultimately lead to a similar answer: Being held accountable for saying/doing something shitty isn't some grand conspiracy to silence you, it's being a decent human being. And if you truly think this entire thread is not helpful simply because you've had to be educated multiple times on bad takes/statements....it might be worthwhile to really take a look at yourself and actually listen instead of posting an apology and in the next breath talk about being "dog piled".

Not that they're gonna see this post if they truly ignored the thread now, that statement just really irks me.
