I would commit almost any crime if rage against the machine was playing

Spiritual Machines is one of the best albums of its era in any genre, imo. They were on the radio at the wrong time.

I think of Our Lady Peace more with like The Calling than nu metal

It wasn't really tied to TBS/GLASSJAW as much as the idea of misogyny being the problem. I saw an interaction where someone said something like "people don't really listen to TAYF anymore because of the misogyny" so I was more so coming from that angle when the Kanye praise started. I totally agree with the TBS sentiment. I struggled with that album like 5 years ago because of that stuff and haven't revisited it since, and I loved that record when it came out.

And you see it everywhere, to be honest. People totally cut down artists for the way they write about women, but then I see people praise others that do the same thing. So it's not really about Kanye or TBS or Glassjaw as much as it's about "I can't see past that to see the value that you're seeing." So to me, there isn't value in his music. And I've read a lot of the articles saying the same thing I'm saying about Kanye, and I've read why we shouldn't let that be a determining factor. I just choose to align with the former.

Edit: also, I should have just messaged this. I don't mean to derail the thread again.

I remember reading somewhere that the production on Rage's S/T is so top-notch that it's often referred to as a golden standard for the production business

They had one of the most unique singers of the era,

Just check out "One Man Army" and "Are You Sad?" and it's clear really quickly that that had something unique

Uhhh forget which Dave Matthews song, a steely Dan song can't remember which, some choir stuff, a counting crows song I think, uhhhhh God it's been two semesters since I took it there was a lot. My professor hasn't paid attention to music since the 90s so it was never modern stuff haha. Actually there was a John Mayer song I think that was as modern as it got.

There was a sting song too that was used to be one of the more challenging ones because the entire thing was a giant marshmallow of reverb

Does not surprise me. It's about as good an argument as you can find for studio perfectionism. Steve Gadd on the title track is some of my favorite drumming ever.
