Glassjaw is art. Kanye is art. It's all art.

Half the people who shredded that Glassjaw album said it was because the quality of the songwriting/music didn't outweigh the content that rubbed them the wrong way. Therefore, by literally the easiest extrapolation of logic ever, clearly they find things in Kanye's work that outweigh their issues with it. Pretty goddamn simple, man.

But I'm crazy for thinking that's a problem, man? Okay. So long as what we enjoy outweighs what's actually wrong, who cares?

im probably the biggest glassjaw fan in this thread and i was the one criticizing them.

it is completely acceptable to enjoy something but also criticize it. it's healthy. i suggest it, as a matter of fact.

The first song on his debut has "We wasn't supposed to make it past 25" sung by kids on the hook. Do I need to move on to track 2 for more evidence as to why it shouldn't be discounted as garbage? Or just another lyric from that song?

i feel like it's also fair to say they're total garbage at least from one's subjective perspective

Exactly, and most people do. I currently don't feel comfortable supporting Ye financially after the stuff that went down during TLOP. Doesn't mean his music isn't incredibly important

I don't know that i'd go as far as say it's healthy, in this particular situation. I can get the same message on social issues from someone that doesn't feel the need to get the point across with misogony. Clearly, I have a different idea of how to enjoy things. I'm no stranger to making sure my POV isn't myopic, as I constantly read and try to understand things I may not agree with (policy, religion, health, diet, political opinions, and so on...) but when it comes to music I simply don't take that same approach. I can't enjoy something like that.

TBS is a perfect example. It's why I tend to listen to their most recent stuff and recommend it to people I know, because TAYF is uncomfortable to listen to. And I don't even think that's as bad and blunt as some of the shit Kanye spills out of his mouth.

i just dont think it's a bad thing to enjoy art with problematic aspects if you're aware of the negative aspects and analyze them and critically engage with them. everyone has their own line to draw on what makes them stop liking something/someone, and that's totally fine. i just dont like how you came in here immediately trying to judge the entire thread for criticizing a but not b when that's really not how it is at all.

To listen to his discography and deem it total garbage completely negates or demeans an entire, giant facet of his music directly related to race, racism and oppression. Either you're ignoring it, which is impossible to do if you take a second to look at his lyrics, or you don't find it important. Either way, I don't value that opinion. You can have qualms with his lyrics about women, many of us do, but still find value in a great deal of his music

Could we stop responding like this? Just reply to the post directly and explain, or don't. It's condescending/passive aggro otherwise and it isn't helpful or productive.

Bullshit! Read what I just said. I can be educated on all of those things (which I value and seek) without having to hear him refer to his SO as a bitch or countless other women, or whoever his flavor of he week is. Just because he offers value in one place, but acts like a slimeball in another, doesn't negate it. Just alike, I don't value that opinion.

I think it's tough for me because so many people call Kanye West a worthless egotistical asshole and I feel the need to defend him from that criticism, but obviously there's valid criticism of him as well, feel the same way about Miley

And thats fine, take issue with the slurs he uses. I do as well. But acknowledge that his work has value

i mean i think it's undeniable that he's massively shaped and influenced hip hop as well as broader culture. but i don't think it's invalid to not like any of what he's done. as long as you accept that some people do and that's also valid.

But that's what I'm saying. It's hard for me (personally) to find value when in his art when I can't get that same value somewhere else without all the bulkshit inbetween. Obviously subjective, but that's how I see it. Reducing the value of one group of people to bring about awareness of another is counterproductive.

But it appears that I have an unpopular opinion, so this seems to belong here.

And I do. I just thought I'd share my unpopular opinion about all of it. Because when I tell people I don't like what he does and why I don't, gasps fill the room, lol! It's an unpopular opinion!

yeah i think maybe people would have responded a little better if you had noted that you were speaking personally rather than universally. i got what you meant but there are a lot of people who diss kanye universally so people get defensive

Because of what I've outlined to you, I think his music is garbage. It adds no value to my conversations, because as I've said, I can't get that information elsewhere.

people also would've responded differently if you didn't try acting like everyone in the thread is hypocritical because of a conversation about different bands and a few posts following your Kanye post as if either of those things are indicative of where everyone stands on the issue
