god I love it. I plan on doing a mismatched headstock w my strat build whenever I can afford to do that lol

context is key, some guitars look great with a matching headstock, some don’t.

I like matching headstocks on a case by case basis. I think they look a bit strange on strats and especially teles, but I really like them on the offsets. Think Gibsons would look all wrong with matching headstocks, but I like it on my EC.

Try making any sense of that. :crylaugh:

Need help from my bass friends here. Do you have a combo amp and if so what brand?

Im pretty much down to either the Ampeg BA112 or Orange Crush 50, but am open to others.
With COVID I’m not 100% comfortable going to my local guitar shop to test them out. I obviously will before buying an amp.

Got a bass back when we got our stimulus checks and have been playing out of an Orange Crush 50. No complaints. Of course, I’ve had nothing else to compare it to.

I finally finished this TD inspired strat build. An old beat up TD squire body refinished in almond with an ocean mist stripe (Rustoleum products). The original neck was trashed and needed new frets, so I put on an American Fender Strat neck, Fender staggered locking tuners, and a Fender American Hardtail Bridge. You technically don’t need a string tree with the staggered tuners, but I’ll probably still add one anyways lol.

I had a bare knuckle juggernaut pickup installed at first. It rips and is sick for high gain stuff, but this Seymour Duncan Custom is a bit brighter and has more clarity with a more controlled output. It’s wild too bc the SD pickup was legit $100 cheaper than the juggernaut haha.

I put the juggernaut back in the jazzmaster. Thinking about selling the Jazzmaster bc I hardly play it.

Anyways, this is AJ (Almond Joy).

Thanks! Took forever to finish because stuff kept changing on it and I didn't have all the parts to set it up.

I like the SD Custom as well. The green LTD I had arrive recently had the custom in it and it's a bit of a monster. Have you tried out an SD JB? I'm still torn on which of those two I prefer.

    Guitar looks great man.

Thanks! I played a guitar not that long ago that had a JB in it. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t for me. I wasn’t into the sound I was getting from it compared to some other pickups in a similar set up. I totally see the appeal for them! You can’t really go wrong with a SD pickup though.

The Orange Crush bass amps are awesome. My friend has one and it's a workhorse. He as the 100. He rehearses and gigs with it. IDK what kind of music you play, but those things are great for a rock/punk bass tone. The blender control is awesome and the gain sounds so good in those things. If I was in the market for one I'd get myself a 50, no doubt.

I've kind of neglected playing in the last few months and I'm trying to get back into a solid routine and my playing has been in a bit of an overall rut the last year. Does anyone have any suggestions around practice routines things like that to keep them on task? I've been looking into apps that could be helpful in keeping me on a schedule and learning new songs, techniques, and styles, but most of them are geared towards beginners. While I'm not anywhere near a master, I'd rather not have to go through a bunch of beginner-level lessons like learning basic chords and scales again.

i havent played much this year either cuz my hands were cramping up a lot but im playing now more again since their feeling better. imo best way to beat a rut is simply find new music to listen to u like and hopefully u will get into enough u want to try playing it. doesnt even necessarily have to be a way different style either, i always play more when i find new bands i like.

So, I've recently gotten into trying out cheap AF and unbranded pickups. Has anyone tried this?

I purchased a Seymour Duncan Antiquity P90. I like it a lot and wanted to put another in a different guitar, but didn't want to drop the money. I was looking for a used one, but came across some unbranded P90's for $15 - $25. I compared the materials, specifications, KoHm's, and Alnico magnets used. The unbranded one is the exact fucking same, but SLIGHTLY hotter. Well, I purchased it and installed it. It felt the same and it sounds the exact same to my ears haha. I just couldn't believe it.

So, I purchased unbranded Alnico 5 pickups based on specifications of a $160 set of California 50's I have in a strat. Unbranded set cost me $35. What do ya know? Pretty much the exact fucking same haha.

Not tried anything unbranded, but Iron Gear are sort of an off brand pickup company. I think they design their stuff in the UK and have it made in the far east. They end up being about half the price of SDs and seem to be pleasing a lot of people.

I'm not really sure at what point a pickup is too cheap. Like, fundamentally they aren't made of anything hugely expensive, so aside of the brand name, I guess you're paying for consistency and a higher standard QC?

I guess you're also supporting manufacturing in the US or some local national builder by paying big money on them...

    Nice! What are you getting?

I'm currently modifying a squire strat I have. Going for a Strat Jr style meets Chris Shiflett's "The Cleaver" haha. I'll share once that is done.
