I mean, it's a predatory practice. That's the bottom line.

You are asking 18-21 year olds to sign up for 10+ years of debt. Do they have to? No, not technically. But society, the wage you might otherwise earn, and employers all tell you otherwise.

It's a fucked system that should be changed.

EDIT: Saving up for a down payment and the scam there is a whole different discussion completely. Anybody I know who has been able to purchase a house/condo who isn't a lawyer, a doctor, or in some finance job that requires 60+ hours per week... Has not been able to "save" for a down payment while renting. It was handed to them via parents or other family members.

Shit, even Dave Ramsey is known to express sympathy to those taken advantage by the student loan debacle haha. And he’s someone who can be a brutally honest ass to people so they change their behavior about their situation haha.

So, you’re admitting that different people have different experiences?

You should also, then, understand that these people tend to view things through that lens of their experiences, right? And that it can cloud them to the realities of someone who’s in a context very different from their own?

So, based on that... can you see how your assumptions about what you & your peer group can do... can’t be applied to everyone else’s contexts?

No student debt here, but my buddy has like $25,000 of Student Debt just getting his culinary certificate so he can make $14/HR.

It's insanely predatory and just flat out wrong.

The masses should care because when the student loan bubble pops it’s going to fuck the economy just like the 2008 crash. Almost everyone I know who took out loans has to defer them or has Income Based Repayment. Nobody can actually afford to pay that much with the rising cost of living. The bubble is going to pop sooner or later because these loans aren’t going to be paid off and cost of attending school is continuously rising.

If you can’t see how college and the student loan industry are fucked for their predatory practices then you’re a lost cause. Also if you believe in trickle down economics you’re a dope as well.

Okay, look I'm not arguing against any of that and I generally support measures to alleviate the problem. I got annoyed by a few comments related to cancelling debt like they don't even use their degree, or they went into a bad field that wasn't financially worth it, or paying it for years and not seeing it go down (how interest works), and when those reasons get lumped into the many legitimate reasons, it annoyed me. At least admit you made a bad decision and are getting bailed out with the millions of others that were legitimately preyed upon. Take your student loan forgiveness but at least have a little hindsight to say 'yeahhhh i made a bad decision'.

More benefit would come out of canceling student loans than it would cost the government; it's just a good financial move for the government

Man I hate when I write a really detailed paragraph and never get brought back into the conversation cause there's easier arguments and semantics to fight about instead of my points.

Some of you have some fairly low student loan balances. Curious if folks got some good grants or were able to pay for some of it to keep it lower? My state's public school was maybe 34k per year, and my private school I left was maybe 37k. I wasn't able to get anything other than loans to pay for it it heh. I don't get how anyone has less than 100k for a 4 year school

polling for student loan forgiveness is quite high with bipartisan support. you can say that you can’t convince the masses with loan forgiveness if you want, but you are wrong. they have already been convinced.

i was lucky to not have undergrad debt bc of scholarships, but i have almost 200k in grad school debt. and grad school was essentially “required” for my position.

    great system

yeah but you’re comparing anecdotal evidence. The problem is his anecdotal evidence is also backed up by data showing that what he’s seeing is actually the reality, and what you’re seeing is the exception.

There’s been a loooot of studies and data collected on this, like looking at why millennials are waiting longer to buy a home or start a family than generations passed (it’s the student loan debt)

Even I didn't have debt I would be for it because it would benefit the whole of the economy. It doesn't even have to be personal to me. Do you get mad that people get SNAP benefits?

I made a bad decision because the system that is set up preys upon people including me. If you would have read through the posts from the last time you made a dumb comment like this you would have realized that I had no guidance from anyone in my family to understand this system because they never went to college. But alas continue to just think those complaints you listed are not an indictment that the system is predatory and its just people bitching into the wind.

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I'll have you know I graduated top of my class at Phoenix University, and I've been involved in numerous paragraphs, and I have over 300 confirmed tumblr posts. I am trained in classic literature and I'm the top minimalist poet in the entire US unemployment mass.. You are nothing to me but just another post. I will wipe you the fuck out with paragraphs the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of writers across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your post. You're fucking blocked, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can block you in over seven hundred ways, and that's just with my macbook. Not only am I extensively trained in classic literature, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps Thesaurus and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the Chorus.fm, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now you're paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will write paragraphs all over you and you will drown in it. You're fucking blocked, kiddo.

Even if it was unpopular, which it isn't, its such a massive problem in the lives of millions and would hugely benefit them at such a level that it would counteract any minor grumblings against it, much more likely to be short lived and forgotten.

Its a home run that only a small percentage of people are fighting against, most of whom are probably profiting off of it in some way.
