  1. And I'm positing that this is effectively already how it works, except we hold up "success stories" as evidence that we're somehow better than this.

    Ah gotcha thanks!

Yeah that is terrible, and ofc we have this problem in a way: kids with an immigrant background are found way less at universities than those without that background.

On the other hand, while not denying that problem at all: the dual apprenticeship system gives you the chance for structured learning "on the job" with usually very good chances of the company where u learn your craft to hire u full time after three years.

And there are quite a lot of "good" jobs where u do not need a uni degree: i have friends who did not go to university who work in banking, insurance, tax companies, graphic design, electronical mechanics, etc

Of course a degree helps, but all those jobs you can do by learning it first hand and hands on in a company

Yeah I am really iffy on the European models of getting put into a track based off criteria. Too many things happen in middle school/high school that would pigeon hole people.

I think this is untrue but I don't know the stats. I feel like it's usually upper middle class to upper class who push for private, unless their district has a very poor public school system and they have the money to swing it. I was in a middle class suburban family and going to private school was never a thought in my parents' heads. But we were also rated some of the best public schools in the state, so I'm a bit privileged in that regard

yeah but right now there’s a big movement in the US education system to try and diversify higher level classes in high schools and push more minorities into honors and AP level classes with the hopes that it’ll prepare more POC to do well in college. It sounds like things like that would be harder to push if you’re separating out kids at a young age and etc. Idk, it’s definitely something that would have to be addressed in a bill I would thibk. I don’t think we’ll keep college admissions as “loose” as they are now if we went to completely free school. They’d def try to make it more stringently merit based for entry and that would create some social justice issues for sure.

yeah paid internships have basically been murdered here, part of the college for profit machine. I’d love to see more things like what you’re describing here

  8. I'm not arguing in favor of that system (I definitely see flaws), I'm just saying I think the biggest difference in terms of real life impact between us and them (as a ~minority) is PR and honesty

My grandpa was trained as engineer out of the military in the 50's by a company. Absolutely blows my mind. He had patents on parts that were on NASCAR cars up until the past ten years.

As I said: i rly dislike our system of putting kids into a career track so early.

I think everyone should be able to go to university, but at the same time, I think we should keep our appreciation for the opportunity to not go but do a three year apprenticeship instead.

Actual quote from a local news station in NH:

Because of the rise in the number of daily COVID-19 cases, the state announced Thursday that it will no longer conduct contact tracing for every single case. Instead, officials will focus on certain patients, including people under 18, people over 60, those in congregate care settings and health care workers.

"We're going to contact trace less people now that it's getting worse"

Seems like a way to continue the narrative that only high risk people need to worry

    EDIT

We are also seeing potential outbreaks at 4 polling locations from election day
