I know Ticketmaster is shitty but this seems good. I think they should do this at bars, restaurants, and movie theaters too post-vaccine.

wouldn’t be the first time an idea might need to use different language for certain people to get passed it

I mean implementing fair and independent oversight on police and implementing more rigorous background checks and examination to become an officer - may actually net cost more. call it “more funding for police”.

“Defund” the police was and is such a terrible, terrible choice of word for the messaging.

Yeah to me at face value "defund the police" essentially refers to getting rid of police; I can see why Republicans would think this slogan/idea to be absurd. Should have used something else

Yeah I don’t want to defund the police, I want to abolish them

You will never get enough people to trust that laws will still be enforced without some sort of police. Some cities may be able to pull off something looking like community policing done by the whole community instead of a police force, but it's not something that will be scalable nationwide

I almost included a qualifier asking people not to get semantic about by joke so thanks for proving I actually have to do that next time

Anyway but yeah, I’ve said from the start of the defund the police movement that the name was a problem because

    1. a lot of people who hear the term think that it means abolish the police
    2. even supporters of it have different interpretations of what it means

Ideally it means that you take some of the funding from over-bloated police budgets and increase funding for social services like mental health, rehabilitation, education, etc. That is something that most people do support.

But there are people who will argue for it to mean getting rid of police. That is not what most people support. So it just causes more confusion

I mean, it’s also not a joke (or, shouldn’t be). Magically abolishing all police tomorrow without any other societal changes is a joke; defunding the police to fund & organize better systems, etc., with abolition of the police as we know it as the end goal, isn’t.

It’s like when people react to “ban fracking” by saying “what about the jobs!?” It’s not about just closing down all fracking & doing literally nothing else. Stuff like the Green New Deal is more comprehensive than that oversimplification.

Well, I do want to abolish the police. My joke was more about the phrase being interpreted multiple ways, most of them less radical than if one were to take the phrase literally. That being said I recognize how difficult any road to that idealistic goal is and support attempts to take power and funding from the police and allocate it to more useful places.

yeah but the trick is you do all that stuff without actually saying the end goal out loud. Republican politicians have mastered that skill, a lot of Dems seemingly havent.

gotta lie to win, and you gotta win to do what you want to do
