I think my last good memory of 2020 was seeing Elizabeth Warren torch bloomberg in the debate. That feels like a decade ago.

I’m not looking forward to next Tuesday. Been trying to keep myself grounded and expect Trump to somehow win so I’m not let down, but it’s hard not to get my hopes up. Question since I don’t watch the news ever: out of the big three which has the least shitty election coverage? Gonna watch the news for once since Oregon has a ton of elections I’m interested in as wel.

Dang, fires in California are getting scary for my fiancés sister :-/. Packing to evacuate now. There hasn't been an announcement yet but the fires are really close, it's super windy, and the cats seem to be sensing it too. This is so crazy.

I look forward to interacting with everyone on Election Day saying they won't be in this thread on Election Day but still will because we're masochists.

Yeah Fox News is going to become to "fair and balanced" for the far right and we are going to get a full on embrace of a far right network at some point. Whether that is a Trump network or OANN grows.

Texas is now up to 86.9% of its vote from 2016. Again, a quarter of the electorate is expected to voted on Election Day.

Has anyone here from NJ had their ballot accepted yet? I assume it's just a volume problem at this point since 2.5 million people have voted throughout the state, but I'm still sitting at mine being "received" and not "approved." (They were able to start going through them four days ago.)

I wish my state even told me if my ballot was approved. They only tell you if it's been received and if it's been denied, but idk when they verify that after receiving

Short answer is yes, but like everything else it is worse and a difference of magnitude now. The court has always had a political agenda it basis in favor of, but the basis used to go through swings. The Lockner era was a period where the court was doing everything it could to act as conservative agents and stop new deal progressive legislation until it gave up under threat of court packing. The Warren Court ended up being the political opposite, where the court was creating and pushing pretty (but not uniformly) progressive policies. The current Robert’s court is a swing in favor of radical reactionary conservatism that seems worse, thanks to the Federalist Society.

The Federalist Society (Fed Soc) exists to make the court militantly more conservative. Fed Soc has infested pretty much every law school and actively recruits students into legal conservative, which is part and parcel of regular conservatism. Fed Soc trains lawyers to cook up conservative hack arguments, but the key to Fes Soc is they have created a pipeline for their judges. These judges have been trained to do what they’re doing and have even been appointed to the bench despite the ABA (American Bar Association) deeming a bunch of them unqualified. The ABA point may seem like a minor issue, but kinda gives up the game in my eyes. If the ABA says someone is unqualified to serve as a judge and they become one anyway, it’s probably because it doesn’t matter if they are qualified to be a traditionally “good” judge. The recent rulings in Shelby County and other election cases seem to telegraph that a powerful faction of Fed Soc judges are willing to meddle in elections again keep the status quo in effect. This leads me to believe that there is a faction of judges in the court who are trained militant conservatives and willing to do anything, including influence elections, to keep and maintain power. This project seems unprecedented in its disciplined focus on an ideology and disregard of limits on amassing and exercise of power. So while the court may have always had political ideologies, what’s happening now seems much worse and scarier.

If you have time there’s some info on where to find more. First is a podcast on Fed Soc, next is a podcast kinda touches on how judges end up in power. The court shift history is from (poorly) remembered Textbook excerpts from con law. If you’re looking for a podcast that has a progressive take on the ongoing horror show that is SCOTUS, 5-4 is good.
