people talk about the 4th season being good and it going downhill after, while ignoring the 3rd season is dogshit

  6. Showtime in general produces dogshit shows imo

  7. 1 and 4 are the only good seasons, but everything else had a noticeable downward trajectory

Dexter sounds like one of those shows I'm glad I waited on. I heard so many people rave about it at first and then just shit all over it constantly. There's just too much awful tv out there for me to get invested in early on.

I'd rather spend that time watching horrible movies

Yeah they have some good stuff but never know when to end something. Shameless is a great example of that.

The landscape has really changed in the last ten to fifteen years, but it is still remarkable how HBO had such a dominance in high-quality television. They had The Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood, and Curb Your Enthusiasm at the same time.

I will say that Prometheus and A:C don’t get nearly enough respect, particularly the former, but the rest of his filmography has been WILDLY erratic since...well, ever.

I have thought about the issue of how to properly assess directors with careers that have gone in wild directions. Ridley Scott made two of the most important and influential films of all time. If he had just made Alien and Blade Runner and then died, would we place him higher, or do we average his grade with all of the bad and mediocre films? I usually think of Francis Ford Coppola more on this subject; everyone agrees his four films in the Seventies are titanic accomplishments of the art form, but he also made Jack.

It isn't fair to completely average them out because you are not going to go back and obsessively rewatch and re-analyze the bad ones, but the good ones last forever. At the same time, more weight needs to be given to directors who consistently put out strong material. Martin Scorsese is as great as everyone when he is good, but he has only been bad on rare occasions and even his mediocre films usually have something worth exploring.

Ridley Scott has not made a great movie in decades, and at 83 it is doubtful he will again. However, how many other directors can lay claim to making films as important as Alien and Blade Runner? They are the rare great works that have appeal from the arthouse to mainstream audiences.

I don’t think that’s all that challenging. Nearly all classic, top-ranked musical artists stop making influential or even “good” music after a certain point. But nobody uses that as evidence that they’re lesser-than. It’s just an extra point for the Scorsese types that they have stayed good

he’s made extremely influential or good movies in each of the last five decades. the amount of directors that can be said for is extremely limited. and his top 5 is pretty close to unparalleled

people focus too much on his bad movies
