I find it so hard to interview for other jobs while working a full time one where you don't really get any time off. How does anyone do it?!

I work as a software engineer for a telecommunications company. I've been with my current company for nearly two years and before that I was doing a masters degree. Sometimes I spend my time actually writing code and implementing features, other times I'm trying to fix silly tedious bugs and pulling my hair out. I generally enjoy my job but it can be stressful sometimes.

I remember a co-worker that said his grandmother was on dialysis and he needed to take half days three times a week for the foreseeable future to help her out. A month later he had a new job in Boston. Coincidence? You decide.

Really though, try to plan phone interviews during lunch breaks and if you get an in-person, do the beginning or end of the day so you can just come in late or leave early from your current job. Sure, it sucks to interview and work in the same day, but that's pretty much the only option.

I had a job for four years where I spent the majority of my time trying to leave. I had interviews ALL the time. A lot of them were phone interviews so I would schedule them during my lunch time. Other times, I had to drive 30-40 minutes just to get to interview. I normally told my employers that I had a dentist/doctors appointment or something. Luckily, my bosses were not strict at all when it came to that kind of stuff. I would stay away from the death in family or relatives are sick just because I think it's bad karma and just not a good look. Or, if you really want to be ballsy, you could just be honest with your employer and let them know that you have a great opportunity to interview for a position that you really want. Most employers want their employees to be happy. Every job I've ever left, they were sad to see me go, but happy that i was doing what was best for me and my family.

I just recently got a new job and I asked if we could interview after hours. I even suggested a Saturday interview and it worked out for everyone involved! So don't be afraid to ask for something like that. Other than that you can use the dentist, eye doctor excuse for a few times until they catch on. Or just say you have an appt. you don't need to specify.

I always wonder how people use references without telling their current employer they're leaving. Like all my connections in this field are through this job so if I applied to other jobs someday I feel like I'd have to tell them? Lol idk I've never left a job for another. I've always left cause moving or school or something

The employer that you are applying for should tell you before they contact any of your references. They should understand if you don't put anyone from your current job. They might want to talk to them though after they've hired you just to confirm. It's a tricky situation though for sure. You have to know who you can trust at your work. The fewer the better. You don't want rumors spreading. If you do have someone though that is a superior that can vouch for your work ethic and you know wouldn't tell anyone else, I'd talk to them.

Lots of CS and IT professionals in here!

I work as an IT Analyst for an insurance company (and I know nothing absolutely nothing about insurance! :P) . I mainly look through Java web apps and unix batch processes to debug/fix defects, make small enhancements and support upgrades, and deploy them. I also do a lot of research for our applications and create estimates determining the impact and costs.

Been at it since January after graduating, and so far so good :)

I don't know yet, since it'll be my first semester so we'll see what the program will teach me. I still have to complete an observation day.

Heh, I missed the degree part of your post. Got excited when I saw ophthalmology. Good luck!

I do landscaping with my cousin. Also work 2 nights a week at a gas station by my house. Nothing too spectacular. I have degrees in Journalism and Broadcasting, but my job hunt in that field usually hits a dead end. I never stop trying, though!

I work at a dry cleaners as a front desk manager. It's the most nonchalant, relaxed job I've ever worked. Its a standard 9 to 5 kind of job, which is a subtle blessing in a southern society that is dominated by construction and more hands on, predominantly "masculine" jobs. Not knocking those that do that, it's a noble pursuit, but it definitely isn't for someone like me that dresses the way I do and paints my nails lol.

My past jobs were restaurant waiter and HVAC installer, which were very stressful and hard work but taught me a lot and I met a lot of good people doing those jobs so I look back on them fondly.

Starting in two weeks as a Veterinary Assistant after 6 years in retail (Bath & Body Works, Victoria's Secret) so I'm really excited about doing something that's in my opinion more meaningful. I already have a bachelor degree in business, but if all goes well I'll go back for an associates for Vet Technician and get myself some more debt I'll never be able to pay off.

I work for a Supply Chain company in the demand planning department. I'm part of what they call the 'Solutions' team, which is just a few of us who are tech savvy and can code. We help with a lot of reporting and automation of processes the department does on a daily basis. I feel like it's a perfect fit for me right now because I love to code and we get a good combo of quick little projects and more tedious assignments (Not to mention people love that we make their job easier). I'm not sure if I'm up for becoming a full on developer in the future. I love that I don't have to deal with a ton of documentation and the red tape of a full on IT department (Though this is just from an outsider point of view from my last Software QA job). Though I'm sure I could probably make more in that kind of role.

That sounds awesome! I work at a bank but feel like in the long run I need to do something where I feel some sort of self accomplishment. This sounds great!

    Every job I ever had:

15 - Dishwasher/Food Prep at small Italian Restaurant
16 & 17 - worked at a grocery store (one of best jobs I ever had)
18 & 19 - Summer jobs for the city (awful, awful)
19 - Worked at my college cafeteria (pretty brutal)
20 - Worked at a sub place in my college town called Grinders. It was pretty sweet
    21 - worked at a clothing store - sucked
21 - Entertainment Freelancer for The Toledo Blade
21 - Graduated college and worked at a small town newspaper in Fostoria, Ohio.
22 - Moved back home and worked for a fairly large newspaper as a crime/breaking news reporter for 4 years (saw some crazy shit during my time)
26 - Left journalism and got a job at a nonprofit (United Way) as a marketing and communications associate before being promoted to Director after a year and a half. Loved it.
29 (to current) Marking and Communications Director for a school district. Absolutely love it.
