That'll definitely be there lol. I'm not actually sure how high it'll end up being though. I'm still torn on if I want to lean towards "albums that I love and were formative to me" or "albums that are greatly important in the grand scheme of music". It'll probably be a mix of both. I'm already so stressed about this

Jazz is where I'm kind of stumbling. Plenty of those records are important both to myself and music in general but I'm not particularly emotionally attached to them.

Oh that'll definitely be there. No clue where though. That's definitely an album more jazz fans should hear.

I think I’m going to do this as 50 albums that were super important to me at some point in my life. Some of them I might not throw on anymore but meant a lot to me at the time.

I think I'm going to go with this method as well just to make it a bit easier on myself. And fully knowing that some of the albums may not make the actual list but that people might read through my list and check stuff out on their own

Mine sort of started this way, but I ended up with way more than 50, so the way I narrowed it down was pretty much “would I throw this album on right now?”

  8. Related to that, I'm fully intending to take awhile to do this because I'm using it as an excuse to throw on some records I haven't heard in a long time and see if they hold up! Like the record that was the basis for my username: probably listened to it once a week for period from 2012-17ish but maybe have listened to it 3-4 times total since then. Or I listened to Tell All Your Friends daily for a few yrs in high school. Don't listen to that band hardly at all now but if I'm doing records that "shaped" me I gotta at least consider it.

Yeah it’s tough. Some of these I haven’t probably listened to in 10-15 years but I have such strong memories associated with them so I feel like I need to include them.

I would’ve sprung for Rhythm of the Saints if anything but have really cooled on ol p-sim lately, not sure why

Woohoo. I bet I won't have a lot of overlap with anyone else who submits a list unless @theagentcoma or @Nate_Johnson feel like stepping up so enjoy all that metal and hardcore.

If anyone else votes for 75% of my list, I'll be surprised. But this was a fun exercise for me regardless since it's given me a nice list of albums to revisit since a majority of those I listed I haven't listed to properly in years.

I've seen some lists that have an incredible lack of female presence.

I know I'm more than guilty of that with the list I've submitted, but that's just complicated by a mixed of biases and my historical listening habits that have shaped me considering most of my list is 5+ years old. Plus it pretty much was a stream of consciousness list so I really didn't put much thought into it since I believe that's probably the best way to capture the music that's influenced me over the years.

It's only really within the last few years that I've become aware of those biases and sought out more diverse artists because of discussions on this site. I can't change the past, but I can change what I do going forward.

I"ve seen some lists that have an incredible amount of male presence.

  19. Pleasantly surprised to see Illmatic pop up pretty high on some lists. That's one of my two or three favorite hip-hop records of all time but wasn't sure how much some of that genre's "classics" would show up on these lists.

this was a fun idea it seemed but i’m not going to waste literal hours of my life compiling this excel sheet if people are going to continue being shitty about it. y’all suck lol. someone else can pick it up from here if anyone wants to.

Not listening to women is not "taste"

I’ll have to admit that I have very little women on my list. Historically, I haven’t listened to many female artists on the regular. Its not right, but it is what it is.

It’s only been the last year or two that I’ve been actively listening to more women and expanding my horizons. Gotta do better.

I don’t think a personal top 50 albums list of all time is fair to decipher whether people currently listen to women artists or not
