Machine Gun Kelly has released a deluxe version of Tickets to My Downfall to all streaming platforms. It features six new songs, including “Body Bag” featuring Yungblud and Bert from The Used. The song was inspired by Fall Out Boy’s “Dance, Dance” and the band approved the clearance.

Sidenote: I think what’s been interesting about this album is to see the homages, or some may say pop-punk clichés, being repurposed in a modern way. To my ears there’s a whole lot in this album that I’ve heard before, from Good Charlotte, to Blink, to Fall Out Boy, but it finds just enough of a way to feel new. I don’t think any of the aforementioned bands could have gotten away with it. There’s no expectations. When Blink-182 releases a new album everyone has an idea of what they want it to sound like, but this is free of those and therefore allowed to stand on its own. I’ve been pleasantly surprised to find that it works far more than it doesn’t. “Forget Me Too” is a hit.

I completely agree with this sidenote. It would fit in 2001, but it feel refreshed for sure. Especially with some of the cross-platform collabs. I think it's pretty nuts to think that an artist who is known as a rapper and has never charted higher than #4 appears poised to drop his first #1 album...a pop-punk album in 2020 when the genre has certainly subsided in popularity. I mean, I'd love to go back one year and show myself a picture of me walking around a store wearing a mask and listening to a pop-punk Machine Gun Kelly album and digging the fuck out of it.

Anyone heard the Target exclusive tracks yet?

I seriously thought this dude was going to disappear after the Eminem beef. But here we are and I can't stop listening to this album. Very refreshing.

That side note is absolutely spot on, Jason. Really impressed with this album. It has that nostalgia / homage without the weight of any kind of expectation.

So true. Hopefully this puts pop punk back in the limelight again to some extent. Regardless something like this is great for the genre as a whole.

The original release that came out last Friday was awesome and I can't believe the deluxe version added three more hits. This guy has really knocked it out of the park.

Next to the ATL album this has been a pleasant surprise this year. Really dig the album.

The biggest downside to this album for me is all the interludes. Upon repeat listens, those are just annoying to me.

Love a lot of the songs though. Halsey also freaking kills it on Forget Me Too.

This album is such a pleasant surprise. My Bloody Valentine and Forget You are the two catchiest pop punk songs I’ve heard this year. As someone who wasn’t an MGK fan at all, I’m very happy I gave this project a chance.

Crazy the hooks this guy pulls off with a 5-note vocal range :crylaugh: love this album.

I feel like I'm in the vast minority - I grew up on and still love pop punk and all types of punk (new suicide machines and new found glory are still on repeat for me), but this sounds so awful to my ears. Besides that Halsey song, which I really like - this sounds like garbage. His seemingly tough-guy/cool-guy persona, the lyrics, that Megan Fox interlude of him sounding super hungover, ugh, I don't know. Good for him cause he has Travis Barker as a drummer and I don't, but he's almost the exact opposite of what drew me to blink and the like when I was younger (note that I am 35 now so I'm probably just an old man now yelling at these damn kids). If Mark and Tom sung over concert for aliens, I'd like it a whole hell of a lot more.

Agree with this entire synopsis. I hear very clear blink influences, yet it sounds surprisingly new and fresh, not just derivative. I won't say I'm fully surprised by this album in terms of his ability to do it, "I Think I'm OKAY" from the last album got stuck in my head and was already showing he could morph this direction, but I am surprised by how much I like almost every single song on this whole album, and the deluxe tracks are pretty awesome as well.

I agree about the "kevin and barracuda" interlude. Serves no purpose. The "banyan tree" interlude is actually kind of sweet and isn't bad as an intro into the final track IMO.

do you really get a tough guy attitude from him tho? He gets pretty emotionally vulnerable on this (particularly in lonely). Sure he’s got a swagger and some confidence, but that’s part of what makes this feel fresh. Plus I think it probably comes from being a rapper everyone shits on and wants to fail, so he’s basically the only dude who believes himself :crylaugh:

I'm on this train, too. That Halsey song is great. The rest doesn't do anything for me.

Very surprised at how much I enjoy this album. It's re-tread after re-tread, but it's done so well. There are plenty of bands out there nowadays trying to emulate the glory days of pop-punk who just don't get what made it great in the first place. MGK seems to be so in tune with the genre and have such great musicians/connoisseurs of the genre around him that he can pull it off. Definitely the most surprising album of the year for me.

Maybe not tough guy but a too-cool-for-school attitude? Him slurring his words in a "im so hungover lol" way, that weird gun-shot to the head thing he does. He's on my radar a lot for a guy I don't enjoy haha, I admit. But yeah, blinks been my favorite band forever and what I loved about them besides their great songs was their overly approachable look. They smiled, cracked jokes on each other, and just seemed real. Again, note my age and that I'm from a pre-social media world - so I get that now it's more than ever about look than it was back then and times have changed. Different strokes, different folks. I was hopeful for new pop punk but this let me down hard.

I’ve been active on this site for the past few years and this is one of the first times in recent years I see a pop punk album getting generally all favorable comments. Most of the readers in their 30s probably moved on from listening to pop punk for the most part so I love to see everyone diggin this.

I know I’m in the minority of people who still purchase music, but kind of salty that this was released less than a week after the regular version dropped, completely unannounced. And cheaper!

Wait—it's cheaper too?! Ok that's actually insane. And yeah, I know the dude wanted to get these tracks out, and it's a kind of clever way to get the listens up halfway through the week, but it totally sucks for people who bought physical. Though honestly, if you did, you're likely able to just return it and purchase the other version (though I haven't returned a CD in...well ever, so I could be wrong).
