Season 3 is art

 

It is not good

 

I still liked the show a lot as a whole when I rewatched it for the first time recently but it definitely wasn’t as good as I remembered it being. Season three does drag quite a bit.

 

Season 3 is def up it’s own ass at points. Still good tho.

 

It’s honestly hard to pick what’s better, the incredible first half or the pitch-perfect integration of Red Dragon into this world during the second half.

 

I loved the first half but had a hard time loving the Red Dragon arc as much, final episode aside. I wish both would've been extended to full seasons, but they did as well as they could with the network restrictions.

It's not even a take, just my feelings though. Finding out the show was cancelled early on, or midway through (I don't remember?), might have colored my perceptions. I'm due for a rewatch anyway.

 

the stuff in italy is some of the most cinematic television making of that era, especially on network television. and the red dragon stuff, while it doesn’t hold up to the first half of the season, is still the best “pulling from the source material” the show did.

 

I've never seen the movies (drag me), would you say you prefer the Red Dragon portion of the show over the other adaptations?

Just asking because I'm now craving Hannibal stuff.

 

red dragon (the movie) is better than hannibal (the movie) but still nowhere near as good as silence of the lambs or the season 3 adaptation. manhunter does red dragon the best though.

 

It’s hard to compare the show’s version of Red Dragon to the book and the two movies just because the show had to integrate it into this version of the Hannibal world, with all of the backstory between the characters that exists on the show but not in the book/movies. It can’t be a straight adaptation because in the show’s world, for example, Will and Hannibal have a prior relationship with one another, whereas in the book/movies they do not. But that said I thought the show handled the material extremely well.

 

Yeah, season 3 wasn't as good as I remembered on rewatch. Enjoyable to revisit and as gorgeous as the rest of the series, but it felt like the plot and pacing kind of lost their footing after they knocked everything down in the season 2 finale.

I enjoy the season 3 (series) finale, but in some ways it wrapped up the Red Dragon story too quickly after so much build up. Will gives himself permission to indulge his murderous intentions and love for Hannibal, then uses the moment of clarity to cut himself off from falling into madness. It's an apt end to the story but in some ways it doesn't feel like it connects much to the rest of the Red Dragon arc. Dolarhyde ends up a means to an end rather than a true thematic counterpoint of "becoming".

 

I just found the first half of season three to really drag. Second half was good.
