I, like many other millennials, were told that the only way I’d make a living wage is by going to college. Then I went to school for 4 years with the intention of getting in PT school, they couldn’t admit me because it was full, put me on a waiting list, and I reenrolled. The next year I was flat out denied despite being on the short list for replacements the previous year (still never got an explanation for this) and took it as a sign to pursue teaching. Another 3 years and I have a bachelors degree in education and make shit money for it lol

I just like poking fun at adulting because of how it gets misappropriated in memes where someone is trying to decide which luxury vehicle to buy

 

No I meant like a ton of other things that I can’t/don’t do or are part of my own history, and that are judged really harshly even by people who care about me. Finances is just one aspect of that. Like even what you describe as “fine” is a huge part of that shame since I can only afford to split things with my mother and don’t make enough to live alone. It’s worked for us but it’s still very much looked down on as a way that I’ve failed in being an adult or don’t have my life together. The super restrictive definition of living that’s deemed acceptable in this country is so harmful from so many angles.

also it’s supremely nonsensical to feel bad for not affording “on your own” MOST places you can’t. Most instances you NEED a roommate or SO to split with so please don’t beat yourself up over that of all things!!

and yes that’s absolutely true. I mean in many cultures it’s not abnormal at all for a daughter to not move out until she’s married. Or many cultures stay together even then bc they care for their elders in ways that we don’t.
