I love the album. Gonna top my mid-year list. And I have no issues waiting to hear it again in great quality on Friday. It leaks today, I won't even replace the files on my computer.

It's the blue with silver from Secretly. Mine is much darker than that one though

I appreciate you taking the time to respond. Apologize for the mischaracterization. However, while it’s clear you have chosen to not listen to the majority of those advances, I still think it’s a luxury that many fans are jealous of. I’m not sure why that’s any different than employees of any industry receiving perks - guess it just feels different here since this is a forum with, assumingely, very passionate music fans.

You’re likely right about film reviewers. I talked myself out of that point though since hq music leaks are far more easier to come by than tightly locked films. Even screener season is usually a loss since they’re typically < dvd quality.

Also, what I said wasn't 'don't listen to or download leaks,' I don't care what people do. It was that the people trying to be the one to leak it and actively hurt an artist they purport to love can fuck off. The person going to the store to buy an album early or whatever to be the one to put it online is the person I think sucks.

The idea of buying an album early to put it online is strange anyway, if I got an album early that would never even occur to me

Like going to Target and buying a cd early and risking getting an employee in trouble and then BUYING A CD PLAYER BECAUSE IT’S 2020? Is that frowned upon? Lol

Hahah. Also I can’t speak for you, but as someone who has had the ability to access music before it comes out, I would imagine after a while it must lose it’s appeal? Like I get it’s definitely a privilege, especially when it’s an artist you love, but overall it must not have the same effect on you as it did 10-15 years ago. That’s why I mostly can’t stand twitter, it’s all about being “first” and the appeal of having something no one else does when it comes to advances. When in reality, does it really even matter? I never see you hanging advances over other people’s heads, because like you said earlier, does listening to something earlier really mean that much in the long run? I’m probably rambling but I hope you understand what I mean haha

This comparison only works if Trader Joe’s employees get crazy new snacks 2 months early, or journalists just got 10% off the price of music in the release date haha

Anyone know if the various pre-order sites are going to email dl codes on Friday? Not expecting mine to show up for a few weeks so if not I'll have to download a leak of some kind to get it on my phone unfortunately.

The album is officially out Friday so you can just listen then, on whatever streaming service you use or probably YouTube.

I only download leaks if I have already paid for the album. It's the right thing to do and not that hard of a concept. I get money can be tighter for some people than it is for others, but if it's an artist that you truly love you should spend at least the $10 it will cost to buy it off Bandcamp. If you can't afford that then it won't kill you to wait four days for it to hit streaming.

    I think I download a leak of maybe 1-3 albums a year?

But if I do it’s because:
    1. I’ve already bought it
    2. I’m busy all weekend it’s released and I’m free that Thursday night to listen

are you talking about vinyl pre-ordering? Vinyl pressing have been consistenly delayed for like the last 3-5 years since there are so few pressing plants in NA

I download leaks if and when they become available. I then delete the download and switch to streaming upon release, and if it's an album that moves me or I want to support the artist for other reasons, I'll buy merch or the LP.

  21. That definitely plays a role, the other is that I really hate how most advances get sent ... I don't wanna listen in a webpage and have to load up that webpage every time I wanna hear the album and it be using some weird player that doesn't listen to the media keys on my keyboard. If there's not a download link, it's really more of a pain in the ass than it's worth unless it's one of like my most anticipated albums. That, and over the past 4 years, I've been trying to spend a lot of time with the albums I love, instead of jumping back and forth all the time, I want to really sit with and digest an album, so I can talk about it with more depth. My goal has always been, at least since I started Chorus: if I'm gonna listen and tell people I have something "early" it has to come with more thoughts and something that I'm giving back to the artist/PR/label as well if I am going to do that. Usually that means writing about it in some capacity, usually in the weekly Liner Notes. Which is where I wrote about Phoebe, and last week I wrote about Ruston Kelly. The vast majority of music I listen to is from Apple Music on the day it's released at this point.

But, again, I don't begrudge someone being like "I needa hear this now!" and downloading a leak if they're a super fan and/or buy it/going to replace it and stream it when it's out, but the issue I have is the people that actively try and leak albums. I think that's gross. Like if your album comes early and you're the one going "OH YEAH LET'S LEAK THIS!" I just think there's a special place for those kinda people.

I'm with Jason 100% on this.

the stream was very low quality to avoid leaks, which is understandable (and if a publicist is reading this I really don't hold it against you), but I also feel like I can't properly talk about the record if it's hard to tell how it sounds! I usually ask for a download because even if the download is low-q, it's better than only being able to access via the site and also means I can listen more often. This album is a lot to take in regardless.

Unfortunately there aren't a lot of places anymore to write about albums even if you do get a download :(

Fully agree. I’ve been around forever and I do remember the shift from when the industry stopped going after downloaders and went after the uploaders. I’m also in my 30s now, and I think in my case it’s more just being lazy and Spotify/Apple Music making albums beyond easy to have access to, so for me i’ll just wait it out. I think I burnt myself out in the early 00s having to navigate Napster, Kazaa, Limewire where if you didn’t type a song in exactly what the file name was, you couldn’t find it haha. I remember skipping school and getting Starting Line’s Based on a True Story song by song having to type in something like 05_the_starting_line_surprise_surprise and praying it would show up and then take 45 minutes to download AND worry about bricking my parents computer. Kids today have it too easy lol

They do have a merch/vinyl section. Nobody uses it so the artist teams don't even bother putting their stuff up.

EDIT: The question we should be forcing is why Spotify doesn't pay out artists based on the percentage of subscriber's listens vs putting everyone's listens into one big pot and splitting the overall balance. My pennies should not be going to 6ix9ine just because a bunch of other assholes are listening to his music.
