    hmmm

I'll adjust this for album intro tracks. Starting an album with some ambient track often feels like a band trying too hard to prove they think deeply about their music.

Although I think there's some genre disparity in that regard too. Album intro tracks seem to work much better in hip hop than they do in rock for example.

I actually disagree - I think something like the intro on Anberlin's Cities really sets the album up very nicely. Intro tracks are fine for the most part, I find the interludes more un-neccessary.

How come instrumental bands don't have interludes with vocals? They should, and now it's gonna bother me for the rest of my life that they don't.

I listened to one Caspian album that was kinda like this, had like one (maybe 2?) songs with vocals.

bands that are actually good/interesting instrumentalists should do more instrumental music imo, and/or extend/expand the instrumental portions of their songs.

  5. 100% I wish there were more albums that didn’t rely on vocals to carry literally every song. Very here for long instrumental breaks and multiple songs with vocals absent entirely. Not to imply those albums don’t exist or are necessarily super rare, but for the most part it’s limited to certain genres

I wish my mind didn't wander during instrumental songs/parts but it does

the mind wandering tends to be kinda part of the whole experience idk, when my mind wanders listening to a good instrumental, it's kind of creating an image to set the scene that the instrumental is reminding me of.

The new covet album has 2 songs with minimal vocals and it's so good. Wish more of their songs had vocals honestly.

I rarely find myself returning to revisit instrumental albums. The latest Night Verses album was one that I thought was really engaging throughout. Most I just check out and move on from.

When I first started to get into music I attached myself at lot to the lyrics so I think that's where my "need" for lyrics/vocals comes from.

Like I can appreciate instrumental music, film scores, videogame soundtracks but without the other pieces of the media layered on top I find no reason to listen on a regular basis (obviously scores and soundtracks are means to be part of a whole rather than an instrumental band's album where that IS the whole)

Music without lyrics is like a film's score without the scenes, story and characters. That's how I process it at least.

Night Verses From the Gallery of Sleep managed to write the songs in a way that lyrics on top of the songs would just be overkill so it doesn't seem like it's waiting for the vocals to kick in. Often the instrumental bands I find just end up as background music which is fine just not what I typically look for in daily listening habits.

I do agree that it would be nice to see bands that write 10-11 3.5 minute songs with vocals throughout maybe could expand the enjoyment of their music with more song structure variety (including less vocals for some songs).

The Album Leaf is a good throwback. Definitely wrote a number of papers back in school while listening to One Day I’ll Be On Time

That's part of why I like the Appleseed Cast so much. The vocals were never the focus of the band, they sometimes just feel like an accessory. They're great at creating an atmosphere and weaving sparse vocals in and out of their soundscapes.

I mean one of my favorite things about listening to Sigur Ros is how Jonsi is able to provide a somewhat human quality to their music while largely being utilized almost as a member of the instrumental ensemble.

I used to zone out sometimes during instrumental music. Then I started getting into jazz and that's mostly stopped.

they were really the first band that got me to not focus on lyrics. I used to be huuuge into lyrics and while I still prefer smart lyrics to whiny “woe is me” Sigur Rod really got me to appreciate and focus on the music and atmosphere than what was being verbalized
