@FieldYates Worth noting re: Lane Johnson, per his contract, a suspension would void the guaranteed money in the 5-year extension he signed in January.

What a fuck up, honestly it wouldn't shock me if the team gives him some type of punishment besides the ten game he gets from the league.

 

I'd say voiding 35 million is a pretty good team punishment.

 

its not that he can't still earn it, its just that none of it is guaranteed now

 

Well I'd say the likelihood of him earning it is slim to none. He returns and probably gets popped again and is gone 2+ years and cut.

 

But it's not really hurting him to be honest. He's still making a pretty huge buck playing football.

Demaryius and Alshon have completely opposite roles, though. Demaryius is a YAC receiver who feasts off screens and Alshon is a downfield contested catch type of fella whose YAC ability is Vince Wilfork-esque.

 

Eh, looking at his contract, this ends up being a null issue. Almost all of his true guarantee was a signing bonus. So, he's getting that and his 2016 salary (-10 games of course). They cant cut him in 2017 without a negative cap return, so, thats functionally guaranteed.

Now, if the contract is worded that they can go after his signing bonus...(but pretty sure the CBA made that very hard)

2018 will be the interesting year. If he stays clean til then, then they have a decision. Because his salary will no longer guarantee on the 5th day of the league year, they could make him go all the way to Week 1 before his salary guarantees.

Means he has to make it two full years with no positive test. Something he hasnt done yet.

 

I just now found out that Deadspin is a subsidiary of Gawker Media.

How is that possible? Deadspin is so good, and Gawker and Jezebel are so fucking awful.

So...seems there is a sort of moral void that happens once they get outside the sports realm

 

That's so strange to me considering how impressive and even principled I've always considered Deadspin to be. How do you go from writing pointed and witty criticism from a left-of-center vantage point to ruining the lives of old men with skullets by leaking their gross, sad sex tapes.

 

I still generally enjoy. Grantland was obviously the best, but Deadspin was/is the only other one where the journalism and wit are often decent.
