The big difference here is that the Iconics are full time and live in the US, where as Pete Dunne lives in the UK and as far as i'm aware, not a full time member of the roster. Even when he won the tag titles, he was still in the UK with his partner and new born.

Wouldnt surprise me if they took their simplest womens tag team and did the same

 

Viking Girl wasn't paired with Viking Tag Team. (with them being on same brand, debuting fairly next to eachother, one isn't doing jack shit, and they're legit dating in real life).

What’s the purpose of beating down the winner in a gauntlet match if the next participant isn’t going to immediately win?

The Samoa Joe beatdown of Kofi is the textbook example of this. He looked awesome telling AJ to hit him, but lasted like a minute after.

 

I don’t know if you watched Raw but that had Lashley lose against Humberto because he DQ’d himself by being too aggressive. Then after the dq, he beats down Humberto and leaves him for dead basically. Garza comes out. Now he’s where you’re thinking ok he’s gonna go for the cover or pick him up, hit his finisher, and get the win. But nope, he goes like a whole segment with Garza and gets the win. Then he beats Theory. Then goes an entire segment with AJ where he eventually loses.

That situation is usually booked one of two ways: either Garza comes in and gets a quick, cheap win to get heat or Humberto overcomes the beat down and survives the odds and wins the entire match. They did neither and all it did was make Lashley look stupid and weak. I guess you could say it somewhat protected Humberto, but they aren’t even doing anything with him anyway and we probably won’t see him for another month.

I guess they didn’t want heel AJ beating two heels to advance but then that’s on them for how they structured the order and only having one realistic baby face in the gauntlet.

Yeah, thats what made the Kofi one so good. AJ runs in to stop Samoa Joe as a face, yet they actually booked a scenario where he could eliminate Kofi without being a heel. Hell, even the two gauntlet matches that followed, they did a good job of protecting people while booking plausible scenarios
