I love GBV because they usually write a hook and say "fuck it, it's a song" and that's awesome

So, I've never gotten into Guided By Voices because looking through their discography is... Daunting haha. Where should I start / what is their best record?

90s indie rock (semi) hot take - White Trash Heroes is the best Archers Of Load record

  9. EarlyMorningRiser

    Keep on the sunny side.

Haha "Archers of Load" has to be one of the funniest unfortunate auto corrects I've seen in a while.

Maybe I`m wrong, but feels like it should be here.

GBV used to believe that the true essence of a song was captured the first they recorded it. As a result their albums are made up of what are essentially demos.

Is it?! This makes me excited because I only have All the Nations Airports and Icky Mettle. I love them both. Time to get my paws on White Trash Heroes!

I think you'd love White Trash Heroes if you haven't listened to it

Icky Mettle is tight. I bought it on a whim because it was half off and had bonus tracks. Very good music, they know when to rock, word play is excellent, Web In Front is one of my favorite indie rock songs

Weezer and Mineral should be in here. Definitely have indie rock in them, in addition to emo.

wowee zowee is my go to pavement record. Orange rhyming dictionary is a great record too if you consider it indie.

name dropping is fun but we could also maybe talk about the bands we are name dropping? a little? In reference to that Sleater Kinney post, I've only heard their first album and I enjoyed it heavily because it kind of reminded me of Girlpool if they were more aggressive. Cool band, I can't believe I always forget to give their other albums a listen.
Something that is interesting to me, and 90s indie rock exemplifies this well, is how if an album is truly masterful it'll transcend genres and scenes in a really cool way. Like Pavement or Nirvana or Modest Mouse are bands that show this -- mainstream (to varying degrees) appeal, but still well loved in underground circles, whether you like indie or punk or rock or pop etc etc. The albums that achieve that success are cool to dissect.
