I like a lot of AntFantano's reviews and I think he's spot on about Dealer. Aside from the opening two tracks, the entire album is full of white noise and nothingness. Is it music, perhaps, but structured songs? I don't think so. I know this is an unpopular opinion to have, but I accept it. The Albatross was great, Dealer was very bad. With that being said, he (AF) has made some troubling statements in the past that rub me the wrong way.

Really disagree with the part about song structures..

There are clearly verses and choruses and bridges to pretty much every song on here aside from the instrumental tracks, which are far from white noise, but beautifully crafted minor key instrumental music. Well I guess coda is a bit white noisey but I love it, but couldn't say the same about winding cloth.

Seems like every good album was written in a cabin these days.

Yeah, saying this album doesn't have structured songs is such a load of crap. The verses, choruses, bridges, etc, are very clearly presented. Do you ever listen to Night Channels and actually think to yourself "Where's the chorus? This song has no structure."

How the hell is not having structures in your song a bad thing anyway?
Deadbolt is one of the best songs ever to me and no chorus in sight.

Well i think the argument was that there arnt clear parts in their songs it's just endless droning white noise.... But that just is not true lol

It's for people that like pop music for sure. I don't like it either and I've tried as well

I love pop music and those guys just come off as try hards. (I greatly enjoyed their previous records, too.)

"Tryhard" is an awful descriptor for anything.

How else would you describe someone who you perceive as trying too hard?

I want all of my favorite artists to "try hard" at being the very best they can be when creating.

That's my point, I think it's a dumb criticism. It's just something you can throw out there that doesn't actually mean anything.

it's really really weird how many posters are bringing up how much they dislike the 1975 outside of the 1975 thread. it's almost like they're tr- nah.

so you think the criticism is dumb because you can't mentally differentiate between "trying hard" and "trying too hard"?

Lol what? No, it's weird because it's a completely substanceless criticism that says nothing about the actual music. Not to mention that, uh, "tryhard" literally means "try hard" ... so....
