I got into the band when that album came out. When I heard they were getting ready to record new material, I found it hard to believe they'd top SOS. Then they released Senor and the Queen. Then they announced they were going to record a new full album. And I found it hard to believe they'd top Senor. Then The '59 Sound came out.

I'm always pleasantly surprised and unsurprised at the way Brian and the Gaslight guys have been able to outdo themselves time and time again. Since that early era I no longer have any doubts about Fallon's creative energy.

anyone catch brian's stageit livestream? that was my first time using the platform (missed out on waxahatchee earlier today, d'oh) and it had a wonky start but was a fun time overall.

cruel that the stream ended as he started playing "painkillers" during the encore.

Felt bad not pre ordering this but made sure to order the honey colored vinyl before I regretted it. Can’t wait to spin it!

I'll write you into all of my songs Supporter

So I have come to the conclusion that this album is going to be on my year-end list most likely. It's such a lovely album that is filling all my mornings with happiness and serenity in sense. My girlfriend and I just got a puppy, and this album is expressing the love and warmth that I'm feeling in these moments

Only song I'm not huge on is Lonely for You Only, as it seems more like a drinking tune through the melody of the chorus, similar to how I felt about The Bars by the Menzingers. I'm not the biggest fan of those style of songs, but I get they work for others!

Brian doing so many IG live performances has been a joy. tonight he did the first episode of something he's calling "Sittin Round at Home" where he split-screens with another artist and they each play a few songs with a storyteller bit preceding each one. tonight's guest was Lilly Hiatt, who i am unfamiliar with but was great. Brian did Blue Jeans & White Tshirts, Vincent, and National Anthem. his bits about each song:

    - he wrote Blue Jeans in between tours when he was so broke he still had to live with his parents. said he loved the idea of the title and knew it hadn't been claimed and wanted to write a song with that name before someone like Bruce beat him to it lol.
    - Vincent is not based on personal experiences or an analogue for someone he knows. he named his daughter after a song and had the thought one day that some people out there have to hate the song they're named after. he had recently read Stephen King's "On Writing" and wanted to train his brain that it was okay to write a song about a character from a place of creativity rather than strictly personal experience or "what he knows". said he developed the character of Jolene for months.
    - National Anthem was written after he had just wrapped a record and the pressure was off, which is when he says he does his best stuff. he says he saw a promo shot of Lana Del Rey and a greasy mechanic looking guy with an American flag and sat down with a guitar and came up with the whole song in one shot. presumably the record was American Slang since the song closed Handwritten but he didnt say - he woulda been real early on the Lana hype if so

it was also really cute to see them both all smiles about the others' songs and stories, we stan an adorable king

hes gonna do this every Wednesday and every Sunday at 8 pm et for a while - Sunday's ep is with Dave Hause!

That IG live with Lily Hiatt was so great. Apparently they’ve never even met which made it all the more endearing. That, coupled with Isbell and Shires playing Prine songs and telling stories about him (some laughs, some tears) was a real comfort today.

After 6 years and countless attempts, I have finally found the ultimate playlist of fuck that, this is my actual tracklist for the album Get Hurt :

    1. Stay Vicious
    2. 1,000 Years
    3. Get Hurt
    4. Selected Poems
    5. Helter Skeleton
    6. Underneath The Ground
    7. Rollin' and Tumblin'
    8. Red Violins
    9. Ain't That A Shame
    10. Sweet Morphine
    11. Mama's Boys
    12. Dark Places
    13. Have Mercy

Also, Local Honey still rules and "Hard Feelings" is still my favorite song, although I always listen to the entire album when I listen to any of it at all and the other 7 songs are all amazing as well.

I just can't have anything other than "Dark Places" at the end of that album. It's such an upsetting, band-ending finale kind of song that having something come after it...I can't quite wrap my head around that.

yeah, next to "the backseat," "dark places" is another perfect album closer; it works on so many levels. and actually, those two tracks represent a roller coaster of a journey for the band - the heart-pounding romanticism and youthfulness of "backseat" juxtaposed with the weariness and resignation of "dark places." totally springsteen-esque.

anyway, i think i've said this before elsewhere, "have mercy" would've made for a nice opener leading into "stay vicious."

"Dark Places" is a great song but I don't think I like it quite as much as most Gaslight fans, whereas "Have Mercy" is easily in my Top 3 Brian Fallon songs across all of his projects. Plus, I love "Stay Vicious" as the opener.

Have Mercy should’ve been the opener

See, that's why I'm the odd TGA fan: I am much more attached to "Stay Vicious" as the opener than I am "Dark Places" as the closer.

They opened with Have Mercy a bunch and it was incredible. Gimme that as the opener.

I like "Have Mercy," but not as much as most fans, it would seem. Wouldn't even contend for my top 30 Fallon songs.

I like it live a lot more. They seem to have “finished it” during the tour. Also ideally with the Chelsea Hotel ending.
