CMND/CTRL is probably my least favorite song on the album because of how straightforward it is. However, it a) has a cool groove, especially in the verses as those are in 7, and b) slaps

Prince is awesome though. That really grew on me over the years. The atmosphere in the verses is chilling and creepy before going into this aggressive, in-your-face chorus and then the low end chugs are just icing on the cake

Rocket Skates: So great. Guns! Razors! Knives! Woo! Gotta be honest, I think the production here (the album in general really favors screaming Chino, but sometimes I don't like the way his softer singing is produced. Every time he screams, I think "yeah this is incredible". Remember digging this a lot when it was released as a single as well.
Sextape: Like this one as well. Between You've Seen the Butcher, Beauty School, and this, I didn't ever realize how front loaded it was with slower numbers.

EDIT: front loaded, lol, I just realized I'm on track 8.

Risk: This verse is probably my favorite verse melody so far. The little flourishes behind "I will save, your life" make the chorus. I need to take note and remember how much I like this one.
976-EVIL: This one is good. Great chorus. That's the thing with this album for me. Most of it ranges from okay to great, but absolutely nothing blows me away.

This Place is Death: pretty unique, a different feel in the verses than the rest of the album. Drums are phenomenal here.

Overall thoughts: Each song is pretty good in it's own right, but together they really run together for me. Not many earworm melodies at all. It is one of the easiest Deftones albums to listen to front to back, and I could definitely see it being a good intro point, but this listen really didn't change a whole lot about how I feel about the album as a whole. While I do think this album is more consistent, I think there are 5 songs on KNY I like better than my favorite song on this one.

    1. Swerve City - Really like the groove and atmosphere. Bridge is the highlight. Very straightforward though and doesn’t wow me.
    2. Romantic Dreams - Solid song, but kinda drags and feels very repetitive for a song that’s 4:30 long.
    3. Leathers - A banger. Soaring chorus and viscous verses. Bridge/outro riff is menacing. Just punishing. Love it.
    4. Poltergeist - Another solid song. Main riff is absolutely disgusting. Not a whole lot else to say.
    5. Entombed - Lovely and powerful song. Atmosphere is captivating and the chorus hits hard. Love the outro. Clear standout.
    6. Graphic Nature - If there was a song I could cut, it would be this one. Fairly boring and just too repetitive for me.
    7. Tempest - Love the groove to this song and all the riffs throughout, particularly in the verses and the bridge/outro. Infectious chorus. Another standout.
    8. Gauze - Pulverizing song with a huge chorus. Just bang your fucking head. Love the outro to take you out from the song and guide you into the next.
    9. Rosemary - The best song on here, without a shred of doubt. This is a song you can just get lost in with its dreamy atmosphere. This song is fucking massive throughout and has a sinister outro. One of Chino’s best lyrically and one of the band’s best songs to date.
    10. Goon Squad - I retract what I said earlier, this song is better than I gave it credit for. There’s some cool riffs to this one. Still a bottom-three song on the album for me.
    11. What Happened To You? - Love the dizzying rhythm to this song that Abe and Frank lay down. Love the atmosphere to this song as well and this song really soars in the chorus. Another one of Chino’s best, lyrically, and another album highlight.

Graphic Nature definitely worst track on KNY, but Goon Squad probably a top three for me. I can't help but head bang to that one.

Shoutout to Poltergeist. That subtle change of the riff right before the end, and the fade out into Entombed is perfect.

Rosemary as well, what a beast of a song. Unreal moment when the slow chugging riff comes in for the first time. Song hits another gear with the atmospheric bridge too.

I also forget how good Goon Squad is. Also, the part of What Happened to You? when Chino sings "the sky is falling down" is a sneaky cool part. The guitar harmonization there is something Deftones don't do often. I honestly think this song is a good indicator of some of the stuff that happens on the next album. Haven't looked at credits, but I would imagine this was mostly a Chino song.

Man, I get the complaints about Gore's production, but these songs rule. Acid Hologram, Hearts / Wires. I honestly think this is probably my 3rd favorite behind White Pony and KNY. I know that's a crazy take around here though.

EDIT: Gore, Phantom Bride, Rubicon, whew, what a 3 song stretch.

I have an out of body experience each time I hear THAT part in Phantom Bride. You know which one I'm talking about.

  14. Gore fucks so hard, the song transitions alone are unreal tone-wise. Def think more people would be behind it if it sounded a bit cleaner. I prefer it to KNY, personally.

Gore's like my seventh favourite Deftones album. And I still love it.

Pittura Infamante is the most Bjork-like Chino has ever sounded

Weird and random, but I'm moving through Radiohead's discography and there's a pretty strong comparison between how I feel about Diamond Eyes and In Rainbows. Both just immaculate sounding, streamlined latter-career(?) records that are simultaneously incredibly accessible and incredibly strong in the way they boil down exactly what each band does best.

  19. It's wild that Diamond Eyes already turns 10 (if we count the early leak oop). I remember listening to it on the bus while our middle school class was commuting to a German memorial. The juxtaposition makes it a strange memory in my mind.

I always go a long time without listening to Tempest and I'm like "what's so good about this song again anyways" then the riff at 3:45 comes in and I'm like "oh yep there it is"

What, I can’t try to outdouche this guy after his “who the fuck cares” response to my comment of surprise that a particular album was ranked so low?

If you post a controversial opinion, you’re going to get some feedback, like it or not. Sorry that it wasn’t all positive haha

And I did have genuine expectations of chillness here. I was caught by surprise by @socklord’s annoyance to having his ranking questioned. That’s all. This thread has the best people on this site.

I re-listened to SNW the other day and it has to be the band’s most underrated album. There are so many good songs on there and I think it has some of the best they’ve ever written.

  25. It didn't come across as playful at all, the post you're referring to did

replace "garbage" with "hot" and it would've at least made a difference in the responses you've received
