Some people use the term to delegitimize any attempt to reach accountability, and argues thst it hurts people/kills careers, blahblahblah.

However, some people use the term to describe the social media phoenomenon of throwing the word "canceled" around whenever someone's opinion or actions are called into question without actively engaging in the discussion.

Anyone who uses the term in either context often gets misinterpeted as implying the other meaning, which shows how useless of a term it actually is.

I just think we shouldn't use the word "canceled" in that context, in general, because we're not 15 year old twitter trolls, we have a better vocabulary than that.

Are people honestly giving Matt a free pass for being a shithead in here?

Honestly the only thing people know about him is that he's a family man and hates Trump.

I think he’s talked about dealing with mental health too, but I do feel you hear a lot less about Dan’s life on purpose.

I guess the more people know they more they judge, right or wrong.

I apologize for “judging” Matt Skiba for supporting nazis. It was wrong of me I shouldn’t judge others unless I know them personally. Maybe the nazis he likes are nice and cool like in Jojo Rabbit

  7. I don’t think Matt is getting a free pass. I though the conversations in here this weekend have been pretty level headed and nice compared to how they’ve gone in the past. I think the people against Matt could be a little more calm toward the people learning though. Jesus Christ. Maybe it’s just me but I feel like I’m having to fight fire every time I ask a damn question as opposed to someone laying out points to an admitted lay person

I think, given the track record we have here over the last 20 years, a likely conclusion is 1. Matt is not a racist person, 2. He has a weird infatuation with what would otherwise be called 'dark' shit, neo-nazi shit not withstanding 3. He is pretty irresponsible in today's day and age with promoting some of those ideas and imagery without thinking about the possible consequences it may have for his younger fanbase.

It didn't matter when he was doing it in 2004 because no one knew what half the shit he was talking about/getting tattoo'd was and we didn't have an epidemic of white teens getting sucked into white supremacist propo on the internet. Matt being the defensive 'i don't care if I piss people off' type of person that he is, has no idea how to adjust for that in 2020. It's a problem. It's okay to point that out. On the other hand he's been in the music scene since the 90's and I don't recall ever hearing one story about him being racist so I think that's a stretch there, usually those things come to light after a while, but he does need to learn why some of the shit he says/does can be problematic, to say the least.

I did wanna ask something because someone brought up the lyrics before and I gotta say...compared to a lot of their contemporaries, I feel like Trio was way less problematic back in the day than a lot of others at the time. Yeah they (especially Skiba) sang about some dark shit, but I'm having trouble ATM thinking of some of those types of lyrics that make me cringe the way some of those early Brand New, FOB, or even Blink, etc. and so on lyrics do. I'm almost definitely probably forgetting a song or two somewhere, but I recall their songs usually being more self loathing and in their own heads of depression than having those outward turned lyrics about girls being sluts or wanting to kill them or wanting to use them or etc. Obviously they've got some songs with explicitly violent lyrics (This Could Be Love for example), but even that was directed inward instead of outward. Anyone have any good examples that I'm forgetting? I'm just curious if there's something I haven't listed to in a while and forgot about and maybe see in a new light now.

Also, always a little weird to speculate on personal lives of musicians, but I do think basically Dan grew up and matured and Matt didn't as much.
But it was also somewhat clear in Dan's lyrics IMO that he was always looking for that love of his life/family/kids type of life. Matt was....trying to hail satan and turn the oceans black:crylaugh:

Nevermind, got caught up. Nothing constructive to add, that's just a damn shame. Hopefully he's grown as a person since those days but even at that I sincerely doubt he will ever address it. Is Mark the only one in this band that hasn't been exposed as a shithead?

Basically yes, but Mark has been silent and complicit with all of it.

  19. What was that comment mark posted on his IG last year I think where he kinda went off on someone if I remember correctly? I feel like he said something like “I don’t have to explain myself to you.” What was that in regard to? Probably just blink cancelling a show and not getting called out for something else?

  20. For me personally, blink's current music post Tom is enough of a reason not to listen to them.
But it is quite funny to me how many people wrote Tom off just for making personal choices to better his life but are fine supporting this current version of the band actively supporting and creating "art" with abusers on top of however problematic Matt is or isn't.
I often like to think about it in terms of "Would I be friends with this person if they were just a regular nobody with all their actions/views minus being a good artist/famous?" For me it's a definite hard no on Matt and Travis at this point.

Yeah, I think that was about not rescheduling El Paso if I am remembering correctly.

I don't know why the argument is whether he's racist or not. The bottom line is his pushing the imagery on his platform with little to no explanation and then getting pissy about it when asked why and not seeing a problem with what he did and turning around and blaming everyone else, much like he did when he decided to be a rape apologist and antagonize, belittle and gaslight survivors at his grand old age of 43, he has a problem. He's a grown-ass man who clearly is capable of seeing things from different perspectives and analyzing different situations when he takes a step back to do so. Especially since he says he can read a book full of right-wing propaganda and not agree with it, as well as be friends with full-blown misogynists and racists, claiming to "understand their heart" enough not to fault them for it.

If the guy is going to double down over and over and over again on his shitty takes and get defensive instead of listening even when it's in his own interest to not be a complete asshole, he really doesn't need defending.

The question shouldn't be whether or not he, personally, is a bigot. That's not really the issue most people who have an issue are raising.
