    Assume It's A Bit

I think it's very easy for older fans of Blink/Matt to overlook just how influential artists are in regards to their young fans. For a lot of people, music is one of the first (and possibly the most significant) things you really connect to and subconsciously identifying yourself with the people who made the music you resonate with is absolutely part of that. A 30-something fan of Blink isn't gonna be converted to a neo-nazi because Matt Skiba associates with that group, but what about a 13 year old fan? Someone who hasn't really fully shaped their worldview yet and looks up to Blink because they made art that connected with them on some level? It's naive to think that promoting that kind of imagery/mindset is no big deal just because you can overlook it.

I took the liner notes of TOYPAJ to my barber so he could cut my hair like Mark.

what these guys do and promote matters.

  4. What would it take to get Skiba and even Travis to speak up and admit to their faulty judgements? Does mark just not want to rock the boat? Blink is making money therefore let it ride? Nine seemed like a step in the right direction for them as a whole. I’d have loved to see them lean into a song like HAPPY DAYS and really make a statement about mental health with a strategic partnership and video. I think they still can, but is something like that contingent on some label involvement or something? a band their size might have full control I really don’t know.

None of them will acknowledge any of this.

Skiba in particular gets defensive rather than admitting fault

Skiba is the only one who acknowledges that some people don't like what he's doing and it's reactionary, angry, and dismissive. Travis and Mark seem content to not directly address anything unpleasant.

    Never said he wasn't.

But ya, not a good look, he should be less shitty, me not listening to blink won't change that.

All I'm gonna say about it.

I don’t really get your point, then. I posted that Skiba was problematic. You asked what else he had done to prove his shittiness, I did, and you said it doesnt affect you. You’re deflecting

Does anyone here know Matt personally?

Discussing what Matt posts publicly does not require knowing him personally. He is putting it out there for anyone to see.

I‘d be curious what someone who knew him personally thought of him. People having been discussing what he’s posted for pages and pages now. I don’t see anything wrong with asking for someone’s feedback to gather information.

  14. Toby Morse had him on his podcast. Toby seems to love him. He also sings a song called guilty by association so I doubt he Judges most people

Toby doesn’t stand with racism though he hates that stuff and if Matt was really like that I doubt they be friends

  17. I think we’re saying similar things in different ways. All in all I think Matt can afford to be more responsible and transparent and Mark could be the impetus. What’s Dan from alkaline trio like?

Dan is overall pretty private. I don’t know much about his views at all.

Matt seems really well liked by a wide variety of artists and musicians, plus he’s still working with Dan and that’s been going on for decades.

He’s always put forth a certain image. I don’t know how much of it is for fun, to get a reaction, or real.

Again, mostly just curious to hear if someone knew him personally. Even if it’s from working a club he plays regularly, toured with him as a musician, brother-in-law, I don’t know. Seems like the kind of guy that leaves and impression. Curious what that may have been.

I feel like people have had a chance to reflect on his web presence, and will still continue to do so.

I guess quote me if you have a story because it’d a least like to read what someone has to say.

I mean, I think multiple things can be true at once

    1. Matt isn't using his platform responsibly
    2. He may or may not personally be a racist
    3. Even if he isn't he's an asshole who is way out of his depth on nearly every social issue, from #MeToo to Police Brutality.
    4. You can still like the music he made without endorsing his values.
    5. You can also chose to condemn him, and don't need to justify your reasons for doing so.

It affects me in seeing that yes, there is more evidence that Matt skiba has a concerning relationship with white supremacy beyond simply reading books on fascism and artwork (which is what I thought it was before your post). I'm also now on board in thinking that band mates, the label, managers, etc should consult him to stop doing dumb shit like this.

I think point 4 is the issue. Cancel culture means cancelling all related projects.

fuck off with the cancel culture shit, it's not real and no one is "canceling" anyone.

I stg if we start this argument again...

Anyone who has anything to say about "cancel culture" is dumb, regardless of what side they are, including me, because it's such a meaningless label that's not worth defining

  25. Just interested, don’t we all know what we mean when we say that? What’s the preferred term? i considered it a colloquialism
