And I read a lot of source material by terrorists who attack Muslims and mosques because when I practice my faith I need to know the thoughts of those who want me and my family dead, for my own protection. I don't exactly trust the interpretation of other sources as key details might get left out. And if a non-muslim ally were to go to the source material, I would likely have greater trust in them.

Just giving you another angle to think about, not particularly interested in your response (unless you're a practicing Muslim)

What the fuck did I click on.... this is the blink-182 thread, right?

Some of their band members are doing some not so nice things, think it's fair to discuss it here. Probably better suited for the accountability thread but their audience should be informed too.

  4. I think there’s room for constructive conversation to be had. I don’t foresee that happening soon. This was the nicest comment I’ve read thus far in opposition to blink
Someone wants to come in and not stomp their feet and be belligerent and open to having a conversation, let’s. But we know it’ll be a group of folks talking down to people willing to listen so...

I get where you're coming from and that's understandable and I was anticipating a response like this. I don't go into reading secondary material with blind faith, trusting I'm getting all the information. Some scholars approach the issue with the intent of reclaiming capitalism/the status quo of the state, others come from a socialist/anarchist perspective critical of such institutions (and in turn there'a overlap between radical left and right movements which they rightfully interrogate as well).

With someone like Skiba who makes cryptic, troll-like posts showcasing the work and symbolism of Nazis and fascists, not to mention flaunting his adoration of Death in June - that's reckless and problematic to say the least, especially if he's willfully ignoring the history of genocide rooted in such movements and figures. Is Skiba someone to be trusted?

In my opinion, I don't know what to think of Skiba right now. A lot of red flags around him and all I can say I have no desire to support anything he's involved in at the moment.

I also don't think it's necessary for people to make assumptions about him, is he a weird dude ? Yes, absolutely. Does he like weird stuff ? Yes, absolutely. I read books and shows about the mind of a serial killer, does that make me interested in being a serial killer? Nope. You can also be into certain things with wanting to learn the history and also not agree with it at the same time. I also posted a video of the owner of the art gallery where Matt is doing his art show, but I'm sure some people decided they didn't want to watch to try to get some context. Should Matt probably have put more context around his posts? Absolutely, we can all agree on that.

At this point he has enough of a history of playing with Nazi imagery and literature/being friends with Nazis that there’s no real reason to give him the benefit of the doubt. At the absolute most generous, he doesn’t care about the associations.

Also not to mention his regular support for the constantly problematic Chicago PD.

Exactly. In isolation the picture of the books with no explanation is a bit weird. But given the context of the last like 15 years of similar or worse actions, which are well documented, then we can begin to question his character. He lost the ability to have the benefit of the doubt years ago when he kept associating with far right persons and a history of far right imagery.

Even if you don’t want to question his character, he has to know the influence he has on his fans. Posting that stuff without context is foolish with the younger fans he can negatively influence by merely being indifferent to what he puts out there.

If he doesn’t care about the message he sends the world, I’m not sure why the world should care about him.

  12. Since the conversation is being had - is it not just as likely that the number of people that follow him due to him being in blink just roll their eyes and say “man Matt is crazy” far outweighs the people that see the book or art he’s posting or people he’s with and say “man I wanna be just like that?” Not justifying it, but some people can just like blink without worshipping them and their posts and everything around them. Not Another Christmas Song isn’t some Nazi anthem. It’s a fun blink song and that could be enough for people.

I know I was influenced by my favorite bands when I was 12-14. Seeing Tom campaign with John Kerry and hearing Billie Joe have us chant “Fuck Bush” live made me question if I shared my conservative parent’s politics. When I was a kid, and even now, when artists I love talk about what they’re reading or interested in, I have an interest in it. No one is saying blink’s music is fascist. But to shrug off Matt’s overt interest in this stuff is misguided.

  14. Also not shrugging it off but I’m not sure 2020 blink has the same influential power they had in 1999-2004

At least we're having a civil discussion in here even if we all don't agree. Kudos to that.

So as long as it’s not the most people it’s okay? What’s the acceptable number of people he can influence until it’s big deal then?

Yeah I think that is a kinda problematic take. I know it's probably devils advocate and everything, but still. Saying it's okay as long as the amount isn't that much. That's how dangerous views spread. It starts out with one or two, and grows. If even one kid looked at that post and took it seriously, then it's a big issue.

i think everyone here is saying it’s fine if he wants to delve into that on his own time , but to share out to an audience that includes impressionable kids is a problem.

I can’t count how many times Conor Oberst or Tom DeLonge or Billie Jo said something in an interview when I was younger that helped me form the opinions I have today.

    This is exactly the same

FUCKIN SAVAGES IN THAT FUCKIN BOX Prestigious

It's just weird how excited he seems to come off about this stuff. I don't care if people want to learn about shit, I don't even understand the serial killer obsession in this country. He's just really bad at social media. And I imagine 4 years of Tom fans going at him hasn't helped his people skills on the internet. But yeah certainly lots of not good looks lately.
