Release My Mind, My Garden Grows

These guys have been one of my favorites for years now. Ever since I heard Separation I was hooked. I've personally never really understood the problem people have with TTWTWM though. It might not be as hard hitting or heavy as Separation or their other stuff but damn I spun the hell out of it nonstop when it came out and I still find myself coming back to it just as much as their previous works. I feel like this new sound is exploring even deeper into that same change in sound they had between the other two albums and I love it. However I definitely wouldn't complain if this one had one or two tracks that return to their older sound that got me into them in the first place.

I think Separation is their least interesting album, and I liked it a lot. I think they did what they did on there really really well but in retrospect there isn't a lot there that I feel is "fresh" for lack of a better word. They knew their niche and stuck firmly to it on that album. TTWTWM, while it has it's flaws, seems more interesting to me personally, and while this single is not in that vein at all, I am really glad they are continuing to be more interesting.

The Things We Think We're Missing is far better than Separation. I still like that record but I'm not a fan of the snare sound.

I still think it'd be better if it was less "the only volume we know is loud" but i am realizing that's not true and it's just mixed so that it bleeds into sounding like one volume (shout out to I think Nick for showing me that lol)

    Sounds like a remix.

The curveball coming from a band who worked with Will Yip has happened before. Last year Turnover released a cool album. I just hope Balance isn't trying to mirror Turnovers success, or Will trying to mirror I should say. It's one song at this point. Just doesn't capture my attention. Their last album tried to be too grunge as well.

last album wasn't very grunge at all iirc

it was kind of grungey, but in the way that bands doing alt rock in the wake of the 90s are all vaguely kind of grungey in the buzzword kind of way. Like idk, seems like to many "quietLOUD dynamics + heavy = grunge" and so i guess if i squint i see it but grunge is not really a word i like to use on post 90s bands

Grunge Influenced. Guitar buzz ending one track into another. Less than prominent vocals.wanta to sound like a touch of Nirvana and Soundgarden.

Right, the sort of fake seamless transition from feedback into feedback. I see it and the trope of it all and such, I just think to say it was being too grungey or too grunge influenced is weird in that the things that come to mind for those things are all pretty broad in my mind specifically. The buried vocals in particular seemed like a shoegaze influence though, a less obvious one than a lot of bands were going for. Which I appreciate, they'll use the voice like an instrument but not exactly mix it like it shouldn't be heard at all.
Also I do want to apologize if my grunge comment from earlier came off as condescending, didn't mean to be a dick or stifle your opinion or anything.

Just an observation and no offence. As I was growing up bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Offspring, Green Day, Blink and so many more broke out. I feel like bands who lived that same experience have done that gritty grunge alternative sound. Other younger bands just took that model and tried copy the key points from grunge like the last Balance record. Not a bad record, but I didn't feel the need for those elements because that had something cool there already naturally.

would love to hear a record that sounds absolutely nothing like anything theyve ever done and so far i like the direction

mhm, I think a lot of bands have repeated certain elements as well, kind of to the point of over-saturation at times, but the elements that I personally hear most are things that are so broad as to be kind of a weird touchstone for me (the quietloud and the heavy) and so I personally scrutinize that criticism when I hear. That is obviously a personal bias, because your criticism is valid and I hear what you mean when you say that, and I agree that often times those elements didn't have to be there, so there's that!

This has me really excited for the whole album.
Enemy is my favorite B&C song and this sounds like a growth from that sound.

Wonder how they will play the drums live. Hopefully incorporates some pads into his kit

I hope they don't completely stop playing Separation songs like they have with I Just Want to be Pure. Think the new song is really good tho, I understand if they stop wanting to write in that style anymore or w/e

Whats the deal w/ Sunbather and King Road Merch? I want that dad hat

  16. I'd say 0% chance they drop Quake from their set and a very low chance of dropping Void and Stonehands

Last time i saw them I don't think they played any of those songs (opening for Circa Survive on Long Island)

  19. I cannot imagine BalCo would have not played Quake at the very least during whatever show you were at

They have dropped pretty much everything pre-Separation though, and don't even really play the songs from the Braid split

really enjoy the lyrics of this new song

    Faint and numb
You keep my head unsteady and my hands shake
    Fought another day, and now
You wait until I'm standing in your landscape

Said we're looking at the stars
We're floating into empty spaces, I know
That we're looking at the stars
Our burning open sky illustrated, no more

    enjoy that a lot

I can't remember. But if I'm remembering correctly they only played More To Me. But I could totally be wrong.

New song and album art reminds me of The Cure. I dig them both.
