Oof big, big yikes on the part of this author. This article isn’t quite the puff piece/press release that the Pitchfork article was but it still paints ESH as sympathetic and “humanizes” him way too much.



So that’s the way it is. The survivor isn’t happy about the situation and ESH cares more about how this all has affected him and his career than how his actions affected the survivor. Good to have confirmation of what we essentially already knew. Trash.

I posted that article in the Pinegrove Facebook fan group (yes, I am a member, don’t ask why) and I was fairly heavily questioned for using the term “survivor” instead of “accuser”. Also, I posted the quote from the woman, and the most popular response is that rather than her not being comfortable with the band proceeding on, she is just tired and done with being involved with the situation and wants it put to rest. (To reiterate, this is the view of the Pinegrove group on Facebook)

 

I feel like it's both tbh.

 

Yeah, that’s how it came across to me as well. It’s gotta be exhausting dealing with this.

 

She's definitely exasperated that ESH dragged her and this situation out into the public when it seems to me that she did not want that. But we also know that she isn't happy with how they've re-entered the public sphere and been portrayed as having "done their time" or "made their penance" or whatever.

But eh, people like that obviously have to tell themselves whatever they can to still listen to ESH with their consciences clear I guess.

 

It does seem that the survivor didn’t want the situation public, but then I’m confused as to why Pinegrove brought it to light. I guess to explain why they were going to disappear for a bit? Even then though, they could have cited other reasons for a hiatus, especially one that had an end date.

Yeah, Sheridan is garbage and that situation is shady as fuck, but it also shouldn't detract from the fact that the survivors (remember, there are multiple. only one is being focused on in the public narratives b/c the other didn't feel comfortable coming forward) doesn't like the way the situation was handled and just kinda wants it to be over.

 

I'm certain you'll not care, but he is in fact actually a human. People who do wrong things are still human beings. You don't have to like the guy or agree with how he's handled anything, but unless you've never required anyone's forgiveness for anything ever, that's an incredibly weird thing to say.

Should that be the case though? Conversation and questions should be encouraged and that just isn't the case around here.

 

Conversation is encouraged. Attempting to defend shitty sympathetic articles about abusers, thus allowing them to retain power and fans to easily write the situation off as a misunderstanding is a bad look

 

Really wish people and publications would devote this much energy into the Dylan Mattheisen situation, so I'm just going to keep bringing it up here when I see anything about it.

I guess no article would be better but tbh i found it much clearer in that article that it was not resolved amicably and he doesn't feel sorry about what he did and he just feels sorry for himself and also goes on to say their new music is lack luster so it's much more on the negative side of things and hopefully some people will read that and think about it a little more critically and that's not so bad.

 

Everyone that tours with, associates with, and/or still supports that band should be ashamed of themselves.
