are there any modern surf rock bands worth checking out?

 

GIving The Receiving End Of Sirens another chance after almost a decade, and not much has changed opinion wise. Between The Heart And The Synapse isn't good. The songwriting feels... amateur. It all blends together, there's very little variation in the song structures, tempos, and arrangements. The vocalists' melodies are so samey I still have a hard time telling them apart. I was bored by the end of the third song, and there still was 50 minutes left of the same thing over and over. I'll never get it I guess.

I'm listening to The Earth Sings Mi Fa Mi at the moment and it's the total opposite so far. It does seem overlong as well, but every other aspect is improved. I particularly love the intricate electronic touches which add a haunting or even industrial feel to their sound. I wouldn't mind them expanding on those vibes if they ever make music again.

yeah, never really dug them either. one of those bands that had all the makings of something i'd like but was always pretty bored listening to them

 

I have heard this one as a cover version by Deftones. Its worth checking out too

 

The reaction to Mi Fa Mi on APnet when it dropped was hysterically overblown. Not a band I'm dying to go back to, but it was fine

That said, Migrant kinda sucks haha. But the Acts and the Color Spectrum and masterpieces imo

 

He was only in the band for the first album anyway

 

The Dear Hunter have released some GREAT music, and yes it's a lot to take in and not everything hits, but he's a fantastic songwriter

 

deerhunter is the good dream pop one, the dear hunter is the overwrought boring one

 

Whichever one was second to use the name is a big jerkhead for making it confusing for everyone
