Donald Glover actually yeah, he's not 100% my thing but you can't deny the talent or ubiquity

I had no idea that Donald Glover was a different person from Danny Glover. I just thought you all were being real proper with his name lol (even though his legal name Danny not Donald)

Idk what I find more amusing, the thought of Danny Glover doing This is America or a five year old Donald Glover telling Mel Gibson that he's getting to old for this shit.

Kokomo is my favorite Beach Boys song. The fact it was for the Cocktail soundtrack and had that John Stamos cameo in the video makes it even better.

Is there such a thing as an unpopular opinion about the Beach Boys?

yeah the unpopular but probably correct opinion is that 70s Beach Boys is actually better and more interesting than 60s Beach Boys

One of the first non-single Beach Boys songs I heard was All I Wanna Do. Sounds like a dream pop song 20 years before shoegaze/dream pop was even a thing.

First of all I'd recommend not paying much attention to the lyrics because they're rarely anything special and are corny sometimes, which they were a 60s pop band so like obviously. Similar to the Beatles, the Beach Boys were significant less for that than for their production and the ways in which they experimented with pop music.

But basically the band's output between Today (1965) and Holland (1973) is typically considered their artistic peak, I believe. I have no idea what amount of exposure you have had to the band, but if you've never even listened to Pet Sounds (1966) then just start there; "God Only Knows" is the most famous and probably the best example of what makes them special in general: bizarre instrument choices, heavily layered "wall of sound" production, tons of harmonizing.

This was just the way I was introduced to them so I'm biased, but after that I'd recommend going straight to Surf's Up (1971), which still "feels" like the Beach Boys but is notably darker in a lot of spots, especially on songs like the title track and "Don't Go Near the Water." Even more than Pet Sounds it really helped drill into my head that there was so much more to the band than the kind of popular conception of them. What also helped was listening to Beach Boys and then immediately after, listening to Animal Collective's Merriweather Post-Pavillion and realizing that on so many songs (eg "Guys Eyes"), what I thought was bizarre, unique experimental pop was in large part just copying the Beach Boys' style lol

Beyond that, I think like I said earlier - just bounce around their stuff from the late 60s/early 70s. During that period they were just all over the place musically. Like the post above me noted, "All I Wanna Do" sounds like a dream pop song, but on that same album (Sunflower) you have songs like "Slip On Through" which sounds like it could fit on a Curtis Mayfield album. A large amount of their stuff is considered a precursor to psychedelic rock and chamber pop and even lo-fi/indie rock stuff, in a sense. Honestly the deeper down the Beach Boys rabbit hole you go, the more you realize just how fucking weird a lot of their music was even by today's standards, let alone the 60s/70s. Even with the stuff I'm not that big on, I deeply appreciate how far out there they would go without giving a single shit about alienating their mainstream fanbase lol
