At least he's not bragging about how 'we' won as if he is on the team. Biggest pet peeve of mine.

There's nothing wrong with saying we if you went to the school/grew up a fan/had family there lol.

Right there with ya...he does that too. He's a Tennessee grad, so I kind of let it go since he has made his mark on the school in some way, but it still gets under my skin a little.

I let it go if somebody does it, because I don't really care and it doesn't affect me in any way, but it still feels weird to me.

    Yes.

  7. It should be and is a goal of every sports team to make the fans feel like part of the team. It breeds deep connections and loyalty. The entire point of sports as a viewer is to feel along with and according to the team. I just really don't see the issue at all

Like I said, it's a pet peeve of mine. I get why people feel the connection to say we when referring to their favorite sports team, I just disagree with it.

But here is a counterpoint to that. We all are music fans here. If you are one of those people who are really into a particular band would you not find it weird that that person would start saying we in reference to the band. I'm a big TWY fan and am seeing them tomorrow. Would you not think its stupid for me to on Thursay morning to tell you we played well/bad last night?

Being in a band isn't competing and trying to win a game. That's why people don't say we played well or whatever about a band's show. @Brenden

But watching a sports team isn't competing either.

Only sports fans that can say we are people who own stock in the packers.

I mean the team is competing. Sports teach camaraderie and that's why people feel included and say we. I can't get my thoughts out very well today. I hope that makes sense lol

  13. The relationship between a fan of a band and a fan of a sports team aren't comparable. A band is making art for consumption by the fans. A sports team is a brand trying to build a base of fans based on geography and circumstance, not quality or style of art or playing.

Plus, I'll tell you this - every sports team would love to have all their fans think of themselves as part of the team, to a reasonable extent. I doubt the same is true of many bands.

I can be a very elitist sports fan at times which is why I hate the we. Especially to football fans because you only have to worry about one day a week to follow it.

So tell me something awesome Supporter

Fan presence at sporting events can have an effect on the opposing team.

If a home football team wins because of an offsides call in their favor or a basketball team wins because the away team missed a FT from crowd mental fatigue, the crowd contributed to the win. Likewise if there's little HFA, the crowd could be contributing to losses.

Not saying you can't have it as a pet peeve, because you certainly can. Freedom of opinion and all. That's just my reasoning behind it.

This must be discussed a lot? I never really posted in sports threads on AP because a lot of the people seemed like they quiz girls on what they know about sports.

It's discussed a lot on other sports websites I used to visit, not sure about on AP cuz I only ever went to the NFL thread and was more of a half-lurker

THIS is what we need to keep from happening on c.fm

Too many good people stay away from the sports forum over there because so many of those guys over there try to act high and mighty
