"Turning a blind eye" means "pretending not to notice". Skiba clearly knows, isn't hiding that he knows, and doesn't care about the consequences of having a neo-Nazi on his album.

He said he knows that Douglas is a controversial figure, but is pretending not to know that he is an actual white supremecist.

There is serious evidence that the dark imagery in his band's music is tied to his personal beliefs, but Matt chooses to ignore those outspoken about it.

Well Skiba seems to have a lot of friends who are interesting characters, and he’s also friends with people like Fat Mike, Travis, Mark, Dan, Derek and on and on and on who seem to be the opposite of that.

Jesus Christ. Being friends with neo nazis isn’t erased or counterbalanced by being friends with other people

Minimizing a white supremacist's white supremacy in an on-the-record interview is not "pretending not to notice", it's lying to protect his Nazi friend. He didn't deny anything there.

Skiba is literally a nazi sympathizer. He sympathizes with/is friends with someone proven to be a nazi.

I personally didn't read Skiba's quote as an acknowledgement of Pierce's supremacist leanings, but either way, it's still an ugly attitude that I'm not gonna die on a hill defending.

  9. Did you read the portion of the interview that came before the quote that the user posted in this thread?

Here's the whole thing, for context:

Name dropping Travis as a positive example of friend this week is not a good look when he's the reason blink is on an XXXTentacion track

No, but it kind of shows where you land. He obviously loves the extreme personalities on both sides.

He had a membership to the church he of Satan too.

He’s actually probably worked with one of the most diverse collection of artists of anyone I can think of. Hardcore, punks, goth, pop punk, dance music, hip hop, major labels, indies, famous people, unknowns, a lot people with depression people who’ve transitioned, this neo nazi guy we’re talking about, goof balls, drug addicts, on and on and on.

Sucks to hear that the Pearce guy is in there, but I’m not going to judge him solely on one person he worked with.

Maybe this is all a good reminder not to hero worship musicians and that they too are not perfect.

Also, for those unaware, we are talking about a song from 2008 on Alkaline Trio’s Agony and Irony called I Found Away, and it’s the mumbling guy from the intro.

I don't really care how you personally read it, he said what he said. The acknowledgement of Pearce's Nazism (which, idk why you're downplaying his Nazism by calling his Nazism his "supremacist leanings") is admitted when Skiba engages with the question from the interviewer. He knows full well why he's being asked the question and he gives an answer befitting someone who pals around with actual Nazis.

He is friends with a white supremacist. He has defended that dude within the last 5 years. Why are you defending that?

  17. Love the notion that it’s okay to endorse a white supremacist as long you’re buds with a bunch of other *~*goof balls*~*

    Sith Lord.

The Church of Satan is basically just atheists/agnostics trying to one-up Christians by not actually believing in Satan and living by logic and individualism, which is one of the things that brought me to Trio when I was younger. Hell, it was Derek that got him and Matt membership cards and they just ran with it.

Besides that, yeah Matts been kinda shitty.

Okay, you're right. He definitely does secretly know Pearce is White Supremacist. But I do think his interview was trying to deflect that by differentiating other people thinking Pearce is a Nazi from Matt himself thinking so.

But the more I tried to find ways to rationalize Matt's actions, the more I realized his refusal to engage in the subject matter was the proof of how spineless he is.

His knowledge isn't a secret! He brought up the fact that that song is one of his favorites, and that he put Pearce on the song knowing who Pearce is, completely unprompted. He was proud of it. He's just also a coward who doesn't want the fact that his friend is a Nazi to hurt his bottom line. It's literally that simple.

Also shame on the that interviewer for not outright asking "Why did you put a Nazi on your record?" as a follow-up to that statement.

I don't think it's that simple though, because there are 3 levels of acknowledgement here:

    1. Death In June uses Nazi imagery in their music, which has caused controversy and widespread admonishment of DI6 as a White Supremacist band.

    2. Most supporters of the band, and the band themselves argue their imagery is purely narrative and doesn't actually represent their worldviews.

    3. Despite this, Douglas Pearce IS clearly an anti-immigrant racist, who ideogically identifies with a historical "left wing" of the Nazi party, and "9 times out of 10 has no problem" with "White Eurocentric Racialism".

Matt clearly acknowledges the first view is implicit in the question, and then gives a rebuttal reminiscent of the second viewpoint, but never acknowledges the third point, which is the nail in the coffin of acknowledging Pearce is a white supremacist.
