German isn’t blunt and literal, it just sounds that way. It’s a pretty nuanced language, more so than English I would say. Probably not quite like French though.

Fun fact: in Vienna, the German doesn’t sound blunt or whatever you want to call it. Their German actually sounds really warm and pretty imo. I adore it.

 

Generalizations are of course unfair, but nobody on the continent likes English tourists lol

From an outsider perspective, it definitely feels that way but then again, I’m a native English speaker who knows little German.

 

Yeah like I said it only sounds that way. Dutch on the other hand really is direct and blunt lol

I recently learned the Viennese word Damenspitz which is now my favourite word

 

i gib da glei an damenspitz dass'd die ham drahst hawara

 

I am not even sure what that means tbh

 

It means slightly drunk, or I guess tipsy lol Beschwipst as regular Germans would call it

One of my oldest friends is from Vienna and when we first met as teenagers on some message board her online name was “GetDrunk”

 

I actually do still find german to be a bit less nuanced, seems theres less correct ways to string a sentence together. The german dictionary is comparitively smaller. And some words can be very oddly specific. Just my take as a non speaker.

For anyone that says german has to be blunt sounding I direct them to listen to pretty much all of the southern dialects esp Alsace and Switzerland.

 

I guess a lot of that has to do with the fact that in german you far more frequently just out two words together instead of having a word of its own for things.
that said isn't there a very prevalent meme that there's a word for everything in german?
