the late prevailing narrative among fans of the MGS series is that the games’ storys post 3 were no longer co-written by Tomokazu Fukushima and that the absence of his input led to 4 & 5 story being total garbage

 

Isn’t this...something that should be expected of a reviewer? Like unless a game is broken to the point that finishing it is impossible, I don’t think someone should be able to write a full published review if they haven’t finished the game.

 

I think there is a certain threshold you can cross with most games where you can have an informed opinion that is worthy of a review. Death Stranding is a 35 hour game if you rush it. I honestly think if you put 40 hours and you don't see the end yet you can still form a coherent argument why a game is bad or good.

 

Yeah idk I don’t agree with that at all. It’s not a review at that point, it’s like, idk, “impressions” or something. And you certainly shouldn’t be putting a score on a review for a game you haven’t finished. That’s like if a film reviewer walked out of a movie with 20 minutes left in the runtime or a music reviewer never listened to the closing track of an album.

 

depends entirely on the game. You can't finish something like FIFA, and unless something meaningful changes at some point in the game, I think it's fair to say you can score it. That said I have no problem with a dev saying "please only score it if you finished it or have reached at least this point".

An unfinished movie/book or an unfinished game I don't think are necessarily comparable.

 

We’re obviously talking about finish-able games here, so FIFA or Madden aren’t what we’re talking about. If a game has a defined endpoint, you shouldn’t write a formal review and put a score on it if you haven’t finished it. It’s journalistic malpractice otherwise.

 

Idk sequencing is important too though and it's a game/movie/album's job to make you want to experience it all

But I guess it's still fair to say that you haven't gotten the full narrative experience if you haven't gotten to the end even if the ending can't sway your score (cuz it could always make things worse too)

 

Yeah but then write something like “this is what I thought of what I played but it is not a review.” I’m not saying incomplete opinions have no value or shouldn’t be allowed, I just think that at a base level if you want to fully critique a game or a movie or a book or a record, you should have to make it through to the end.

 

You’d think so, but a lot of reviewers don’t

 

I'd be surprised if any IGN reviewers finished games

 

you don't need to finish a game to use copy and paste.

 

To be fair many game reviewers don’t get paid enough in relation to the time it takes. Which also kind of makes sense because video game criticism isn’t actually a very sustainable business model.

Enjoyed it but couple of the missions were duds and I hope that's the last time CoD uses Russians as the bad guy but probably not lol

Man, did not see some of those Death Stranding scores coming. IGN are typically suckers for these types of games.

 

It probably has too much water

 

I hope that's included in the new pokemon review

 

Based off the map, it'll be 7.8 too little water

The fucked up thing is that the person behind that too much water review is a legit Pokemaniac, one of the biggest ones in the video game media. It’ll haunt her forever even though she doesn’t deserve it personally.
