I think that's fair, it's obviously OK not to be into pop for the most part. I am sure you find moments of pop that you dig, and artists that you are into, but I definitely understand pop not quite being your thing

Love pop, not a fan of what's on the radio. But the station here is particularly dated and unpleasant. station is like 6 months behind so by the time a song has already been beaten to death they'll put it in their heavy rotation and beat it further and I die inside

Really like this album, but after IB I can’t pretend there’s not a bit of a let down for me.

I’d rank it in my second tier JEW albums with Bleed and Damage, at least right now.

IB, Futures, Chase are all the elite level albums and this just isn’t quite there.

Eh it has its ups and downs. A few years ago it was solid. Shit is overly homogenized right now though and seems to be getting worse

Transport me back to when Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morrissette, Goo Goo Dolls, Paula Cole, Natalie Imbruglia, etc. were ruling the radio and I will truly live my best life

I was only around for a part of it as a little kid, but based on what is still played today, I feel like the 80's must have been a glorious time for the radio. I'm talking "Total Eclipse of the Heart" era.

Bought my ticket for their show in April. I've never seen a band I really love that's not local so I am unbelievably hyped

    all we have is time

..do you think there aren’t tuned vocals on this record?

  13. Radio is a struggling industry. Does anyone actually think they’d opt to play stuff that didn’t keep people tuning in?

  14. I stopped following the radio except to look at the charts every now and again, but I follow things like the Today's Hits playlist every week to get an idea of what's out there and what's popular and people are talking about in music. I usually find a good 4-5 songs that I enjoy on a consistent basis and stuff that I'd never have listened to otherwise.

billie eilish and khalid being enormously popular gives me a lot of hope for radio pop

It's definitely better than it was a half-decade ago. Bashing the entirety of radio pop is easy and kind of lazy IMO. None of it is great stuff but it really never is--that said, not ALL of it is trash either.

edit: anyway, I don't know why we got on this topic. this album is amazing and we can all agree on that.

khalid is one of the absolute worst when it comes to the vanilla, homogenized boring shit the radio plays constantly.

i mean i mentioned earlier how a few years ago i thought it was fine so i dont really agree. i think right now it is worse than it has been at other points. part of that can be attributed to iheartradio having a monopoly on the fm airwaves and just the same shit being played everywhere. the "alt" station has half the same playlist as the "pop" station in philly.

but im also of the opinion poptimism went too far this decade and a lot of critics tried to convince us a lot of inoffensive pop was much better than it actually is so im biased

  21. I think we’re just growing up. There’s always a group that hates the radio. We’re just growing into it.

but then again no one needs to get me involved in an argument about poptimism

long story short: there are two versions of poptimism, the first was a reaction to the primacy of rock music as the only true serious and authentic form of music, where pop and pop-adjacent genres were considered easily-digestible and disposable, when the truth is that pop music is more-often-than-not worth thinking about and reckoning with. this form of poptimism lifted up records like britney spears' blackout which is *not* inoffensive pop at all.
second form of poptimism is a '10s thing and weirdly reverses the values of the first poptimism, in that it coalesces around big rock-like album statements by big pop stars a la beyoncé and is often indistinguishable from fandom/celebrity journalism. i wouldn't say either of these advocated for "inoffensive" pop in particular or is responsible for "inoffensive" pop being a thing. a lot of critics hate khalid, for instance, bc they think he's boring
