We're gonna have to agree to disagree about Sunami then...hard music has always had goofy bands not meant to be taken somewhat seriously. They're harmless and stupid. I guarantee you they'll probably only put out one or two more releases before fading into the abyss.

    Half of this is true.

Not sure how harmless they are. I get that it's a joke and not to be taken seriously, but with hardcore having a "resurgence" and more outsiders coming to the genre, it's a bad look. People are already criticizing Knocked Loose because of the violence at their shows, and those injuries are (mostly) accidental. The video from the Sunami show has dudes uppercutting each other and attacking people that aren't even moshing. It just gives more credence to the people saying that moshing/crowd surfing should be banned.

The video is stupid as shit and people being violent there are idiots, but there's a huge difference between what is happening in that video with Sunami and at the venues that Knocked Loose is playing at. Knocked Loose are playing 500-1000 cap rooms right now with people from a lot of different people coming to their shows. A lot of these people just generally appear to be the type of people to go to big venue shows, go to only a few shows a year, or are going to some of their first hardcore shows. I agree that the violence, moshing, and crowdkilling at these shows creates a gatekeeping barrier of entry that shouldn't be there, and is a bad look. I'm not gonna argue that.

Without knowing more context about that Sunami show, that looks like it was at a DIY venue in San Jose where the crowd was mostly friends of the band and people who knew what the hell they were getting into. It really doesn't seem any different from some of the more "exclusive" local DIY type shows I've seen video of and been to myself. These people also seem like the type of people that go out to generally every show in the area regardless of whether it's Sunami or Knocked Loose playing. It also feels like it's a bit of a fallacy to compare the biggest band in hardcore at the moment with a joke underground meme band that's getting some viral attention because they have lines about killing cops and resisting arrest. One of those has staying power, one of those is a flash in the pan we'll have forgotten about at this time next year.

If crowd killing is coming back can I at least get a new Nails album to go with it?

IIRC, there's a new Nails album at least written. We got that 7" earlier this year that wasn't bad. I imagine we'll know when it's coming out because Todd Jones'll open his big mouth and say something stupid about Metalsucks or Young And In The Way again.

I’m guessing he wised up at least a bit because he deleted the Nails twitter lol

This is fair but Sunami is all I've seen on my Twitter feed all week. Granted I probably follow a bunch of hardcore kids and bands. I guess you're right that Sunami isn't really reaching anyone that's not already part of the scene.

No matter how big or small the band, promoting violence=bad.

I don't really care about the violence at a Sunami show, because it seems like everyone there is well aware of what they're getting into / if idiots want to beat the hell out of each other, then Darwinism or whatever. My main issue is more-so the uninitiated that see that Sunami video and think all hardcore shows are like that. There's already a whole thread of (non hardcore) people on this site (Accountability thread) that are condemning moshing all together. I agree with Nate that inciting violence is inherently bad, but not all pits are created equal.

That's why, like everything else in life, context is necessary for framing a strong majority of the time.

I also will say that I'm amused this Sunami video is getting that kind of attention for its stupid pit action. hate5six puts out at least a video a week that contains something similar and that never gets this kind of traction...

There is a trickle down effect that occurs. Knocked Loose brings x, y and z bands. People get excited and want to check out band x when they do a headliner and bring “cave man” band with them. Hardcore is pretty popular these days so it has potential to bring a lot more bad attention. Once again, always playing devils advocate.

Yeah, I'm just playing devil's advocate too. I can't really argue with anything Shane has said. He's right. I just know that on a local level I've seen crowds get younger and more violent over the last year or two. There's obviously a bunch of new fans to the genre and be it a Sunami video, or a hate5six video, a lot of them think that punching people is how to have a good time at a show.

I'm too old/weak to actively participate anymore, but I still enjoy a rowdy show and think that a certain amount of anarchy is part of it/almost necessary. But when 17 year old girls are getting skull fractures, there's a problem.

Yeah, and when they come to me in the trauma icu with an internal head bleed. That’s a problem also. Hardcore is a full contact sport!

I once saw an opening band for Reign Supreme in Troy and it was a standing room venue. Literally a room in the upstairs of a bar.

At one point the guitarist was basically moshing into the crowd and swinging his guitar around. Cracked a dudes head open and the guy had to rush out. The vocalist proceeded to address it by saying almost word for word “back in my day you weren’t safe at shows. That’s how it is. Watch out! Haha”

I can’t even remember the bands name so that says enough.

Ink & Dagger are one of the all time greats. I was lucky enough to catch one of their 2010 reunion shows with Geoff Rickly in LA. I think they mention something similar but I can’t imagine a vampire themed hardcore band gaining any kind of traction in 2019 lol.
