I know a lot of people hate the guy, but he brings up why this is happening. It looks like a Chinese company that has stakes in a lot of these video game companies is throwing their weight around.

Jim is the best, honestly.

But it really isn't just that Tencent has its hands in so many Western companies that's the issue. That certainly doesn't help, I'm sure, but the real issue is the Chinese government itself. The pure reason why this is happening is that entities like ActiBlizz, Riot, and the NBA don't want to lose access to Chinese money. If they don't clamp down on support for Hong Kong then the Chinese government will retaliate against them by shutting them out of the market there. And Chinese money has become increasingly crucial to the bottom lines of so many businesses (sports, video games, film, etc.) that they simply can't afford to let that happen (in their minds).

 

That's the diet version

 

Oh for sure. And all of the stuff about films not needing to make money in the US is huge too. You look at the World of Warcraft film's reception and it makes perfect sense, particularly with Blizzard. That movie could get a sequel that zero people in the US would watch and still turn a profit. They are defending their pot of gold.

 

Also, let's not forget, like Jim and many others have pointed out, Activision was literally in the middle of trying to get CoD Mobile approved for a Chinese release last week (they may still be waiting for it but they definitely were while all this was going on). You better believe that was weighing heavily on their minds when they did this.
