After hearing the whole album, I wish now that I never listened to the pre-release singles. Or I at least wish I didn't burn all of them out. Since they're mostly all bunched together in the top half of the album, I'm more likely to listen to the bottom half since I don't know those songs as well.

 

Man I need the rest of this EP (back) in my life

 

The only pre-release song I listened to more than once or twice was I Really Wish I Hated You, and I still think the back half is much stronger so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

 

the record just feels very flat to me, not uninspired. Obviously it was inspired, it's songwriting, so I agree with that. Maybe it's my take on the production of the record, but it just doesn't click with me. The only song that really hits me and can help me overlook that flat critique is "Pin the Grenade." Everything else just feels like it's missing something, but I can't pin it down. Its a tone or a feeling that I'm just not getting.

 

Guess you guys are on a different level than me when it comes to what you're looking for out of a review. If someone tells me something is delicious, my brain says, "mmm let me try!" To each their own.

 

Sorry that was the best analogy I could come up with. Whenever I watch Next Food Network Star, the judges get outraged whenever a contestant says that word instead of actually describing the food.

 

If someone tells me something is delicious, and they're a writer whose taste I know nothing about, I want to know what makes them think that so I know if they like drinking dirty water and I should listen to them at all. The "why" behind a critique is always more interesting to me. Anyone can say "I like this" or "I don't like this" ... but parsing out why you like or don't like something, and telling your audience, I think is the only reason to "review" something in the first place. Why you think something is good, or bad, is essential to the process and just throwing a word salad of adjectives that never even hint at that analysis or introspection seems like a waste of ink. Specifically because I don't think a word like "uninspired" means much at all, while also implying a moral judgement about an artist that you know nothing about. I'd wanna smack someone in the face if I spent years of my life pouring all I have into something and they said I wasn't inspired at the end.

Ahhh was really hoping they would’ve surpassed Zac Brown just based off the reviews for that album. Interested to see what blinks streaming numbers were compared to California 3 years ago.

 

Yeah, this thing is even more awesome than I was expecting. Expectations exceeded. Now I just need to figure out some place to put it in the office since I don't have a basement yet.

So, Darkside isn’t going to chart right?

according to Wikipedia it’s their first single not to chart since 2001 (I won’t be home for christmas. If we don’t count that it’s even worse).

I really feel the whole rollout for this record was messy. It’s a shame since the music is the best in a good while.

 

Don't think they even sent "Darkside" officially to radio as a single. They sent IRWIHY which is currently at like 39 or something on the charts.
