I checked this morning before I left and it looks like my play counts were 43 (song with lowest count) off of NINE and it didn't update since late yesterday so probably a few more on top of that.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

took me listening to NINE Encores to realise Skiba has a harmony on "Darkside"'s "and I wait and I wait and I wait" bit lmao

also: NINE Encores was very bad

The Encores thing didn’t sound great as a streamer but the energy was there and reminded me of the good’ol days.

  6. I have a different Nine song stuck in my head every morning, I swear. Today it was "The First Time."

I think Out Of My Head is so good. It makes me feel good haha. I see why it’s a bonus track though.

Get me. Out of my head.

Mark loves talking about his head and brain

Just speaking from my own experience, I feel like the other two albums had pretty glaring issues even on the first few listens. I still love California and think it holds up better than Neighborhoods, but the repetitiveness in the “classic blink” formula was obvious when I first listened to it. Neighborhoods was definitely a case of people being overly excited that blink was back together but it wasn’t completely praised like this. “This sounds like an AvA/+44 split record” was like every other comment haha.

NINE might fade a bit over time (which is natural) but I just don’t think it has those inherent issues that the last two had.

It’s been over a decade since the last time a honeymoon phase with my favorite band has been this strong. Over two weeks and still going strong. I’m not tired of this yet. Lol.

The rest of the album follows a similar trajectory. The songs are largely uninspired, riffing on the usual tropes, and there isn’t much musical range between them. The one song that deviates from the norm is “Generational Divide,” a fast-paced barnburner, especially when stacked up against the rest of the album. It is a quick rumination on the cultural division between generations, specifically between Hoppus and his son. It feels a bit like a return to form that was stopped short for some reason. This glance backwards is especially depressing as the album moves forward.

For some reason, Blink’s members decided it would be a good idea to start playing with elements of electronic music and vocal processing techniques like autotune. The biggest offender of this crime is “Ransom.” It starts off questionably with some glittering keys, and then turns to shit as soon Hoppus’s autotune drench voice comes in. It’s sprinkled in sporadically throughout the song, and it’s wince-inducing every time. The song soon bursts into typical Blink fare, but by that point, the damage has already been done.

    LOL.

How can one paragraph chastise them for being "uninspiring" and lacking musical range and then the next paragraph shit on them for introducing new musical elements?

    Things have changed.

I know I meant nothing to ya
    Crucify me, hallelujah

Stay the same but kinda different

“It’s uninspired because it’s not what I think is good!”

“Blink needs to be REAL punk”

I find these arguments so juvenile now

And, as Jason has mentioned numerous time before, "uninspired" is not a helpful criticism. It is almost devoid of any concrete meaning.

Using it on an Internet message board is bad enough, but to actually write out a critical review and use the term is maddening. Explain yourself. Don't hide behind vague, undefinable terms!

Is it Mark saying "I like you" in this song?

Don't get the hate for the word "uninspired" as a critique. If you want to convey that something comes across to you as though it's void of creativity or originality it works pretty well.

California felt that way to me.

I think it's used too much as a crutch word where someone can simply say "oh that song/album is uninspired" and move on without actually explaining why it felt that way. Kind of like when people describe food as "delicious". Ok great why is it delicious? What about the food makes it good?

This first half/second half convo makes me sad. I still stand by my argument to rearrange that first half to make it more interesting flow-wise, since all those songs are just as strong as the rest of the album

Certainly, that’s what most people are hoping to convey with the word. What I am saying is that calling something “void of creativity or originality” is often a hollow critique.

I should add that I think the inverse is also true. Calling something “original” or “inspired” is empty praise.

I wonder if people would have liked the first half more if they didn't hear 4 out of the first 6 tracks before the album was released.
