I need to listen to this Earth Gang more, I think I really like them and I like like half of this a lot. Parts of it just don’t transcend like I know they can.

New season of Hip Hop Evolution out on Netflix.

Excited to watch "The Dirty South" episode since the synopsis mentions Outkast, Goodie Mobb, TLC and Kris Kross

can i ask what you hate about it?

one of the things i noticed this season, was they really painted Tupac badly in the first episode and as someone who doesnt know alot about hip hop history it made me really question how "unbiased" this series was in showing its history.

I've read a lot of books about hip hop history and while I can't exactly say that the way the show tells it is wrong, it's so surface level and selective that it sometimes borders on being wrong. I don't remember specifics because it's been a while and I only saw the first season, but yeah. I understand that the format is part of the problem, but it doesn't feel to me like that's the only reason.

I feel ive seen you list off books in the past but you got any recommendations on some good books to dive into? The show does feel very surface level in parts (i was amazed they dedicated like 5 minutes to jay z) but it really just makes me want to dive in more into the specifics on my own and start reading up on it all.

These two are more or less the definitive hip hip history books:

Can't Stop Won't Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation by Jeff Chang
The Big Payback by Dan Charnas

There's of course some overlap here and there between them but they're mostly complementary because of their different angles. I definitely recommend reading both. Regarding sequence I would start with Can't Stop Won't Stop before going on to The Big Payback.

    ---

Then there are a lot of books out there that deal with specific artists, albums, movements etc. One that I read somewhat recently that I really enjoyed is this one:

Legions of Boom: Filipino American Mobile DJ Crews in the San Francisco Bay Area by Oliver Wang

    Another good one of those:

2pac vs. Biggie: Rap's Greatest Battle by Jeff Weiss

I also love this one, which has a very different angle:

The Tanning of America: How Hip-Hop Created a Culture That Rewrote the Rules of the New Economy by Steve Stoute

    ---

There's also a lot of enjoyable artist biographies but that's maybe a different thing. Jay Z's "Decoded" for example is incredible. I remember the one by Grandmaster Flash being pretty wild too. But there are many.

I would recommend to start with Can't Stop Won't Stop before you go on to The Big Payback, yeah. That feels like the right sequence. I'll edit that into my post.

it’s been a year since Mac Miller passed away. I was always a casual fan of his but like Swimming and all the leaks that came after made me a huge fan of his.
