That said, people who are nervous at theaters, I fucking get it. It's part of the reason I'll only sit back row (I can't relax with people behind me, I need to see everyone) and I almost never go opening night. I've worked at a theater for 5 years, and recently quit almost entirely for personal reasons, but I've wanted to for a while because straight up, we get SERIOUS fucking weirdos on a daily basis. I think that's going to happen with any public space and a culture that isn't equipped to handle it.

You are, like, significantly more likely to be shot up in an American school than in a movie theatre. If you’re seriously that paranoid about it then just don’t ever bother leaving your house

As someone who’s been in a workplace violence incident, I kindly ask you to take a step back for a second.

All of these things are statistically rare, but happen far more often than they do throughout the rest of the world.

Yeah I’m not going to apologize for saying it’s unwarranted to stoke fear about some nebulous mass shooting in this thread.

Obviously, but that doesn’t invalidate my point

So i’m not allowed to be uncomfortable in a confined space after something uncomfortable happened to me in a confined space. Got it. Thanks chief.

Yes I’m talking to you specifically. You’re the only one I’m talking to, and all my posts refer solely to your posts. Thank you for accurately recognizing that

Oh good, now the thread is as off putting as the trailer. I guess that’s what I get for thinking the earlier pages meant it would still be worth talking about now.

You specifically are not allowed to be uncomfortable about anything ever, *especially* when it’s something that happened to you personally. That was the exact meaning of my post and I’m glad you were clearly able to fully grasp that.

  11. Not for nothing but this year alone there has been 297 mass shootings. People got shot just going about their day for no reason whatsoever.

I’m not saying don’t ever leave the house but there’s evidently a pretty good sized problem when it comes to mass shootings. And given that they have occurred in some pretty random locations i.e. not just NY or LA, I don’t think it’s all that crazy to be somewhat concerned about going to see a movie which on the surface provides some justification for those who act out violently.

To each there own and all that but given the current climate I personally find this movie, again on the surface (maybe the whole film paints the situation differently) fairly tone deaf.

Not sure why this is so hard to get, like people are purposely stoking their own anxieties or something.

I feel like there's a difference between "this film could feed into the current dangerous cultural climate & thus, indirectly, into atrocities" (which is nuanced & imo pretty accurate)... & "there WILL be a mass shooting w/ the release of this film."

Like, we shouldn't ignore the ways that media influence culture. But, we also shouldn't exaggerate it into hyperbole that distracts from better conversations that could be happening.

Now, there's also obviously a difference between these things & trauma from past experiences. All the love & respect for people in that situation & whatever decisions they gotta make. Though, I'm still not comfortable w/ exaggerated fear mongering being conflated w/ that & given the same space.

This is very unnecessary. The first part might bother people in this thread who have children or work in a school. My wife is a teacher. We are very aware of the dangers in schools nowadays. Though the way you phrased this is extremely off putting.

  16. DOOM taught me how to be an incel shooter. Sorry I meant it taught me how to summon Satan. The Joker taught me that first thing

  18. Ok then I'm going to assume people who think TODD PHILLIPS THE JOKER is going to inspire a shooting are 90s Republicans

I feel like this thread is half people excited to see Joker, but at least aware that the last time a theater got shot up the guy was dressed as The Joker, and then the other half is people just trying to belittle people for having any sort of fear/anxiety about the situation.

I don't think this movie is going to cause a spike in shootings or anything like that. Any incel that commits a mass shooting was always gonna do it with or without this movie. That said, it still feels really tone deaf and I don't see an issue with people pointing that out.

James Holmes was not dressed as The Joker though. Why do people keep saying this?

from the looks of the trailer, this is the one blockbuster movie we just dont need right now, short of a big budget movie starring the proud boys

It’s just because his hair was colored. Holmes was actually a fan of Batman and not the Joker. Nothing suggests that the Joker inspired him or that he wanted to be the Joker.

He was also a sick freak that wanted to shoot up the latest Batman film because a lot of people would be there.
