The worse the person is the bigger the redemption. I think that could work.

But, personally, I want him to stay bad all the way.

Like, is Ben being redeemed worse than Anakin being redeemed?

The short answer is no. People want blood which just astounds me like they haven't been watching Star Wars the last 40 years.

Anakin was much more evil and did more horrid things than Ben

The thing about "redemption" is that not everyone has to believe that what that person did redeemed themselves. Leia never forgave Vader and never considered him "redeemed;" neither did the rest of the galaxy.

Kylo killing a beloved iconic character also means a lot viscerally to a majority of the audience. It would’ve been like Vader killing Leia or Han. Maybe Vader’s redemption is viewed differently in that light?

That’s partially why I am not for his redemption. Killing Han was too much to me. But again, falling that far makes going back the other way all the more interesting in a way. I dunno. As of right now, I’m against his redemption but feel his struggles we have seen make it inevitable.

Ben killing his father kinda makes his redemption poetic in that’s what Han died for. I’m all for it.

redeeming murderers at all is irresponsible narrative to me

It’s been a common theme in stories for centuries. I don’t really see the problem in a fictional murderer being redeemed if it’s justified within the story.

I'd still rather have Kylo be evil to the end. Or I could see another switcharoo like we had in TLJ where it seems like he was redeemed, but he really had something else in mind.

Do you not believe that someone who killed can ever come back to humanity? Is there no way back?

Maybe "redeemed" is too strong a word. I don't think Vader's last minute decision to save his son redeemed him or erased the many horrible things he had done. I feel like it's more of the "no one's ever really gone" sentiment that is more about never giving up on the hope and possibility for light and decency in others, and if we try to fight fire with fire, hate with hate, we will eventually become the evil we originally set out against

I think a big part of it is the sw baddies are authoritarian figures but I also get that part of sw is family drama

Redeeming Kylo now really undercuts the moment in TLJ where he appears to be moving back towards the light only to reveal his actions were done for selfish reasons, solidifying his place on the dark side. Same thing with all this “Dark Rey” talk, we already had her choose the light so to go back on that seems wrong.

I understand this but if you are saying that then everyone saying that Luke pulling his saber on Ben and wanting to end the Jedi undercuts him in ROTJ is correct too

I love the message that overcoming fear isn’t a one time challenge but a daily one and just because you are able to overcome it once doesn’t mean it’s not a threat anymore.

Also just because you make bad decisions doesn’t mean you can’t make good ones in the future.

I do think that if Kylos redeemed we cant just let him get off with a slap on the wrist. There needs to be consequences or remorse shown, but I’m down for him coming back to the light just like I’m down for the real life archetype he represents of the entitled immature masculinity our culture is riddled with being able to grow up and mature.

I do hope that if it’s done it at least is done in a radically different way than Vader’s

ForceCenter talked about this too a few months ago about viewing Kylo less as “redeemed” which is a word that symbolizes forgiveness and being forced to “like” him now and more of an atonement.

It’s not about being forgiven by everybody or having the perception by the audience as a hero or anything, it’s just about him as an individual repairing his wrongs and doing what’s right.

If Kylo is redeemed he'll just help the good guys towards the end of the movie then go off and live a lonely, miserable life or he will die in the final fight. There's no scenario where he marries Rey and is best pals with Poe and Finn or anything like that. They won't do it in a way that absolves him of guilt.
