i haven't listened to chesire cat since 2011 and, if i'm being honest, this is the album i was looking forward to listening to again the least (for obvious reasons). anyway, here's my track-by-track review:


carousel: oh god straight away the production is terrible but even if, say, the mixing was better and they chose better guitar tones etc etc... this would still be a terrible song (/album). it's like tom is purposely trying to sing badly (and not in the normal way that tom tries to sing badly)

m + m's: i feel like i've listened to this song fairly recently actually. probably one of the only good songs on this album

fentoozler: this song gives us the lyrical gems that are "How long can I string you along? How little of myself can I give And still make you believe I care?" and "And do you think that it is right For Tom to spend another night Writing songs about all the people he thinks are gay?" and still manages to be completely unmemorable

touchdown boy: "if a girl sleeps with a lot of guys she's a slut but if a guy sleeps with a lot of girls he's a legend!!! "

strings: who told mark it was okay to sing this way? "sTrRRriinNNggSSs, stRIngS!". the drums straight up sound like dog shit on here jesus christ

peggy sue: people like this song? why? what is there to like about this? can someone please tell me because i'm honestly baffled

sometimes: the mix on this song is so bad i can barely separate the guitar from the bass or make out what mark is singing at all lmao

does my breath smell?: "I'm just so sick of seeing all those dumb, lame, and retarded broads"

cacophony: i remember someone in here saying mark tried to hard to sing well on this album and it just ends up feeling awkward or whatever and, i mean... yeah...

tv: lmao at least they tried to write harmonies for this song i guess?

toast and bananas: "girls are sluts and i'm awesome!!" the song, basically. "one's less than two" at least they've known their demographic is small children who can't do maths since early on

wasting time: isn't this literally the exact same guitar riff from the last song? i think i like this song (or the chorus at least), though

romeo and rebecca: i am sooo ready for this album to done at this point. it's wild how misogynistic and popular blink were in their early days. that's the 90's for you though, i guess

ben wah balls: "What the hell was he to expect / That the girl under his arm wasn't the same / As any other girl / That he had thought that he once met" if tom delonge was a teenager in 2019 he would post on the red-pill and incel subreddits

just about done: a song about rape? very cool AND very funny! haha. rape! yeah!

depends: who could have possibly guessed that a song about shitting yourself would be shit. also i don't know if mark's doing an impression or a reference to something/someone in the outro or not but whatever it is seems incredibly racist?



i liked 2 of the songs on here (m + m's and wasting time). 2/15 = 13% so i would normally round up to the nearest 0.5 and give this 1.5 stars out of 10, but in this case i'm going to round down and give this 1 star out of 10 (and even that feels like it's too high if i'm being honest)

 

i haven't listened to dude ranch yet but it's wild to me how much of their discography from the beginning up until take off your pants and jacket was defined by sexism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia and racism. if early blink was a person they'd be a 15 year old who posts from his mom's basement about how much he hates snowflakes and "pc culture" and i don't think they've ever really reconciled with that or grown up all that much since (see: the joke songs on california for reference)

Reminder that when blink hit it huge a movie about 17 year old boys trying to trick girls into sex before prom was the top movie...and blink cameoed in it. Society as a whole was a huge pile of garbage.

Second reminder pop punk as a genre has not changed much at all.

 

I swear Blame It On My Youth really does get better with each listen
